About Alane

I taught elementary level Deaf students, K-2 for 20+ years in Massachusetts and Connecticut. I took a long hiatus to explore other options and interests. As I explored, I discovered my wanderlust and began traveling by doing pet and house sits, usually long-term so that I can live and become a part of the community. During this time, I have done some tutoring, and I also returned to school and became a bodywork practitioner. I have been enjoying this chapter of my life which is why I haven't returned to the educational system. I have a love for animals, and children, as you may presume, since I worked so long at the elementary level. I can give you my expertise at this level, and fully enjoying working with the younger students.

Teaching Deaf children means that English is their second language. I have had 20+ years of experience. I am able to assess students and their learning styles, and will modify accordingly so that the child can grasp the concepts.

Using ASL (American Sign Language) has always been a passion for me. I absolutely love the language! I have been signing for 35+ years. Deaf students most often have families who are hearing so their home environments do not automatically offer the same language (ASL); hearing children of hearing families usually share the same language. Therefore, along with teaching the curriculum, it is a necessity to teach students ASL simultaneously, which I have done all the years that I was teaching.

I understand the complexities of the hard of hearing, living in a hearing world, maybe trying to fit into the Deaf world. I am empathetic to these complexities and I think my experience of working with the Deaf, and Hard of Hearing can be beneficial.

If you have a child/student who is younger who could benefit from some additional support, I believe I may be able to assist. Please feel free to connect and ask questions. We can work out the details or decide If it is a good fit or not. Thank you for your consideration.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
