About Nikolay

I have a passion in sharing the knowledge and helping others to master new concepts. I am a full-time professional engineer for the last 6 years after graduating from the PhD Program in Chemistry at Rice University. In graduate school I had a lot of experience working as Teaching Assistant, Discussion Leader and Problem Solving Session Leader. I will be more than happy to help others to get on track with their education and to prepare them to face new academic and professional challenges.

I have been through multiple difficult math and physics classes myself and have a complete understanding of their challenges. The best teachers I ever had always encouraged the independent thinking and developed a diversity of methods to solve problems. The most important skill for a teacher is not to be able to present a solution for a problem or repeat the textbook knowledge, but to be able to reflect to himself the student's point of view and to see the problem with the student's eyes.

Individual guidance through the field of study is the key for the profound understanding of any complex subject, it encourages a student to go above and beyond in their studies and teaches the best skill one can learn - a skill to self-study.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Deep understanding of the algebra concepts, experience with their practical applications and leading groups of college students through problem solving.

Algebra 2

I have deep understanding of algebra concepts and a lot of practical experience using them. Through the years of study and research I have aiming for a deep understanding of thr subject and I have been working with people with different backgrounds, so explaining and teaching was a very common thing. In grad school I worked as teaching assistant, discussion leader and problem solving session leader with very positive student's feedback.

C

I have been mastering C for many years starting from DOS Platforms (Quick C, Turbo C, Borland C) to more advanced ones on Unix (GCC/GCC+) and Windows (Visual C, C++ Builder). I also have to offer a deep understanding of the computer architecture and techniques of creating fast and efficient code from basic computations to complex databases and multithreaded applications.

C++

I have experience with multiple GCC+/C++ Builder/Visual C++ creating 100% portable C++ code, with custom namespaces and complex class hierarchies using C++/STL for DOS/Windows/Unix. I learned it from Bjarne Stroustrup's classic book and I can help to learn best C++ practices and to get a student on the track to mastering C++.

Calculus

I have many College/Grad school level classes with excellent grades in my diplomas including Calculus and related subjects. I was a TA in Physical Chemistry class, where I often had to take a role of Calculus teacher, since not every student took Calculus before.

Chemistry

I have a PhD in Chemistry and vast experience as a TA and discussion leader

Differential Equations

I have been through a very intense training on math-related subjects. On the application side I have quantum chemistry and physics, that use the differential equations very heavily. I can provide my transcripts along with the original research work I have done in my PhD career.

JQuery

As an experienced developer I have been using JQuery as the frontend in the several last projects to build a rich UI based on HTML and CSS. In addition to JQuery I would like to offer deep understanding of Web technologies from the lowest levels to the most abstract ones.

Linear Algebra

I have graduated from the best college in Russia with a very intense math program, which included linear algebra. I have quantum chemistry and group theory classes successfully completed on my transcript from Rice University. I have published several research papers with heavy matrix algebra involved.

Linux

I had a vast Unix/Linux experience in the grad school research environment. I have successfully taught Linux through WyzAnt.

MATLAB

I have a lot on hands-on MATLAB experience from my grad school and professional career. From complex matrix/array manipulations, to handling equipment-specific binary data, to 3D-modeling and animations, building GUI. I am a full-time professional engineer for the last 6 years after graduating from the PhD Program in Chemistry at Rice University.

I will be happy to share my knowledge and experience.

Networking (Computer)

I have successfully passed a Hurricane Electric certification for IPv6, which involves both, theoretical knowledge and a practical setup of IPv6 services. This is only an addition to the vast IPv4 networking experience I gained over the years.

Perl

I have recently responded to an urgent Perl tutoring request, successfully taught a session, and a student is asking when I am available this Saturday in case he has questions. In general I have a lot experience with programming languages. PERL was one of the first I learned on Unix many years ago.

Physics

PhD in Physical Chemistry. TA, discussion leader.

Python

I am using Python very intensively at work, using many advanced specific techniques such as list comprehensions. Beside the common library features I am also experienced with lambda-functions, classes, and module development.

Russian

I am a native Russian speaker, proficient and fluent in English. I also have a very deep understanding of my native Russian language structure and use the structural approach towards understanding English. I am capable of explaining every aspect of Russian to a person willing to learn it.

UNIX

I have recently taught a Linux class, but I also have a vast Unix experience running FreeBSD servers, including the one at home, which powers my personal IPv6 segment.

Knowledgable and nice tutor

He helped me debug some C++ codes. He's very familiar with C++ and also told me ways to improve my C++ coding. A very nice person to work with. Definitely a tutor I will go for next time.
