About Mary Anne

Bonjour! I am a professional tutor and interpreter in the French language. I took many years of French instruction in school. More importantly, I lived and worked in French-speaking countries for over 20 years, where I used French almost 100 percent of the time. I am currently working on national certification in both tutoring and interpreting. I love the French language. It is such a beautiful language. You will love it too. I get a lot of pleasure watching my students progress and improve their French skills. I also feel really good when students do well in a class at school that they were struggling with.

I am available to tutor you or your child with your French study, either in-person or online. I am calm and patient, and I will customize your lessons to fit your needs. During our initial meeting, I will assess your French proficiency, and together we will create a plan for your studies.

I focus on both written and spoken French. I know too many people who studied foreign languages for years in the classroom, but couldn't speak or understand a word of the language when in a verbal situation. Therefore, I utilize written resources, audio resources, videos, and some phone apps. I try to keep the sessions fun and interesting.

I assign homework that is pertinent to what we are learning. However, I never overwhelm you with homework. I will correct the homework after the session, and give back the assignment the next time I see you.

I can meet you in your home, or we can work online. I charge $50 per hour for in-person lessons, and $40 per hour for online lessons. I also offer package discounts, which you can ask me about. My schedule is fairly flexible, so ask me what times you would prefer. I will always try to fit you in.

I would love to help you learn and excel at French, so you can use it the rest of your life.

I studied French in school, but I really learned how to speak French when I lived and worked in French-speaking countries. I did this for over 20 years. I have been a French tutor and interpreter for two years.

Please contact me about your needs. I am always available to discuss how you can learn and improve your French!

Tennis:

I am also an amazing tennis instructor. I have been teaching tennis lessons since 2014. I was a competitive player when I was younger. I won state championships as a junior player, and I played tournaments in my regional tennis circuit. I am still passionate about this game.

I learned that I enjoy teaching tennis more than I enjoyed playing tennis, although I still play too. I get a huge pleasure watching students progress. Tennis is a difficult game to master. I try to make my lessons very fun and engaging, otherwise, students can become frustrated. As with any other subject, I make a lesson plan before every lesson, because this way, my students can progress smoothly.

I teach individuals, two people, and small groups. Please ask me about pricing and booking/cancellation policies.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

French

I lived and worked in French-speaking countries for many years, where I spoke French almost 100 percent of the time. I also took French in high school and college for five years. I have been tutoring students in French for two years. I love watching my students improve. I am patient, and I always expect the best from them. I focus both on written grammar and on spoken French. I use almost complete immersion during my sessions, because using conversation is the only way to learn how to really speak a language. I utilize a variety of tools to teach with, including books, the internet, movies and TV shows, and some phone apps. I want to keep my students' lessons as interesting as possible.

Tennis

I was a competitive tennis player for many years, winning state championships as a junior player. I have been a private tennis instructor for two years. I have found out that I enjoy teaching tennis even more than I enjoyed playing tennis. I get so much pleasure watching my students progress. I teach lessons from the beginner through the upper intermediate levels. I teach people of all ages, and I teach individuals, twosomes, and small groups. Tennis is a great lifetime sport!
