About Timothy

For 30 years, I have been involved in the field of education as a speaker, teacher, administrator and tutor. Recently, as I have engaged in more tutoring settings and online teaching / tutoring, I have experienced a renewed passion for teaching, learning, and helping students achieve educational success. Thank you for considering me as a tutor for you or your daughter or son.

Teaching:
In 1985, I began my teaching career as I started my own private school. That school continues to operate today and, recently, I returned to serve as its Director of Online Classes. In 1993, I accepted a position with a small, private school as administrator and teacher. Since that time, either with schools, independently, I have continued my teaching career. During this time I have taught Economics at the junior high and high school levels. Other subjects I have taught include: Math (pre-algebra through pre-calculus); Latin; English Grammar; Science (physical, earth, and forensic science classes); History (world history, World War I, World War II, Cold War, United States History); Logic (introductory and intermediate).

Tutoring:
At every stop along my educational career I have engaged in tutoring. Whether providing early morning tutoring sessions prior to the start of the school day, or after-school tutoring time, I have always endeavored to provide opportunities for students to deepen their understanding and experience success in their education. My primary goal in tutoring is not to simply arrive at a correct answer, but to draw out of the student their expression of the concept being studied. Generally, I approach any tutoring scenario by following a three-step process: 1) Demonstrating the problem for the student; 2) Having the student work the problem with my guidance; and 3) Observing the student working the problem while explaining their thinking/process to me.

Personal:
I enjoy reading and learning about history, especially 20th-century history. I love movies, being accused of heavily favoring black-and-white movies. (The quality of acting is so much better) I never play as much golf as I would like.

I will consider it an honor to have the opportunity to assist you or your daughter or son in experiencing educational success and, even, embracing a love of learning for a lifetime.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In obtaining my degree in economics it was necessary for me to complete math classes through Calculus, which allowed me to then complete the required Econometrics class.

During my 20+ year teaching career, I have had numerous opportunities to teach each of the typically required math courses (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I & II, and Geometry).

In teaching/tutoring math, beyond seeing a student "get the right answer," I seek to draw out an explanation of the concepts and processes involved.

Algebra 2

During my high school years, Algebra was one of my favorite subjects. I often found myself helping fellow students understand the concepts.

That love of Algebra served me well as I completed my degree, which included the need to complete higher math classes like Calculus and Econometrics.

I have enjoyed the opportunity to teach both Algebra 1 & 2 during my 20+ years as a teacher. I especially have enjoyed the opportunity to help students come to understand how to solve the problems and apply learned concepts to problems of ever increasing difficulty.

Economics

I became interested in the subject of economics as a high school student. That interest continued through the years, resulting in economics as my chosen college degree. I have had the opportunity to teach economics to students in 6th grade all the way through adults. This experience has enabled me to express economic concepts in a manner that is readily grasped by most students.

Prealgebra

It is not unusual for students to struggle with the early concepts of Algebra. I am here to help. My love for Algebra began in 8th grade when I was moved into the advanced math program. From that time on, I always experienced success in my math classes - and even in high school I was one that other students turned to for help. Since graduating college with a degree in economics (requiring the use of math concepts from algebra through calculus), I have enjoyed opportunities to teach classes and tutor students through this important introduction to Algebra. Together, we can change Algebra into a subject you will enjoy!
