About Lawrence

I have a broad base of experience in art and architectural education, arts and humanities program planning and evaluation, and community design process; and am practiced in research and qualitative analysis, grant-writing, public speaking, leading workshops and educational conferences.

I have taught for fourteen semesters as an academic lecturer: at Philadelphia University, Binghamton University, Boise State University, Rutgers University and Utah State University, teaching art and architectural history, and German language and literature.

Crucial for my tutoring skills were my additional Cornell campus experience, as tutor in the Writing Workshop, in training in the active listening model EARS (Empathy, Assistance, and Referral Service) and in the outreach programs below. In working towards the overall needs of the "whole Student" I have come to emphasize such techniques as the wide use of "micro-affirmations," directed towards the recognition of challenges and the tools to overcome them. I had practice supervising the collaborative work with undergraduate mentors working with high school students: in the Upward Bound summer program for “gifted and at-risk” high school freshmen; and at the Cornell Theory Center, supervising undergraduates in an experimental program to teach middle school social studies through a multi-player electronic game platform.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

I have a PhD in the history of art and architecture from Cornell University and have taught in those areas as a visiting professor for over five years. My teaching has included surveys of art history from pre-historic to contemporary art. My areas of specialization include art and architecture from the 19th and 20th centuries. I can help students understand the relationship of art to social context, major styles and national traditions and the various terms that aid in the interpretation of artistic works.

Drawing

I have undergraduate and graduate training in studio drawing, visual thinking and architectural design studios. I have and MA in art history from the University of Oregon and will receive a PhD in architectural history, June 2014.

As a tutor and writing specialist, and in my own recent research on Digital Humanities, I emphasize the use of drawing and representation as tools for brainstorming, mapping ideas and visualization of data. The utility for young minds of schematic representation, creative thinking and the tactile connection to paper are increasingly recognized as exemplary tools for cognitive development.

I draw as much as possible to externalize my inner thoughts; I doodle and sketch for myself in connection with other activities. I work with my own teenagers to help them develop these skills.

ESL/ESOL

I have tutored many ESL students, both graduate/undergraduate students and high school students. I work comfortably with small and large groups and with individuals and can offer a range of referrals to resources for language acquisition.

German

My proficiency in speaking and reading German is near native, in large part because of my early experience as a Gymnasium student in a year spent with my family in Berlin while my father was lecturing there. I continued with German in high school and majored in German in college at Wesleyan University where seminars were in German, studying literature and visual studies. I spent a spring semester in Freiburg, and then a Fulbright-supported post-graduate research year in Kiel, studying regional styles of barn construction. As a masters-degree student in art history, I conducted most of my research in German, as I have continued to do in my Cornell University PhD. Research. I will complete my degree this spring.

I have taught as a lecturer in art history for nine semesters at Binghamton University, Boise State University and Utah State University; and three semesters teaching German literature in translation and intermediate German at Rutgers. This fall I completed an internship in Academic Liaison at the National Museum of American Jewish History, managing applicants and planning the updating of the program. In addition I do freelance writing and am completing my dissertation.

Writing

My own writing is clean and spare. I like to help other writers gain control over their writing, so it feels like a precise and comfortable tool.
