I received my Bachelors in Sociology at the University of Illinois - Urbana - Champaign in 2009. Immediately following, I entered graduate school for my masters in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of Illinois of Chicago. Since my master's I have complete over 100 hours in continuing education to become the best teacher for my students. I have been a teacher for six years. I my teaching started as an instructional assistant in 2011 for a first grade classroom in a private school in Chicago. In this role, I tutored students one on one, subbed for teachers who were absent, and taught science and social studies to first grade. For the next two years, I taught middle school social studies and English. It was one of the best experiences. My 7/8th grade social studies students learned about American history through project based learning. Their experiences helped to establish and reinforce critical thinking skill s that are needed for high school. Then for the 2014-2015 school year I taught 4-5 social studies and reading. In my reading class, students were encouraged to read as much as possible and to find the deeper meaning in both non-fiction and fiction texts. The last two years, I taught 5th grade in a public school in Idaho. Seeing students grow was a major theme in my classroom. We set goals and celebrated learning milestones along the path each student took. Students learned strategies and skills to take charge of their learning in all subjects. This upcoming school year I will be teaching 4th grade students who are non-native English speakers. I tutor in all elementary subjects as well as American History. My favorite subject to tutor is math! I know how we teach math today is different than we learned parents, but it makes so much more sense! Students are expected to understand the how and why of numbers, not just memorize facts and algorithms! My teaching philosophy is of the learning pit (google it, I promise it's cool!). At some point we are all stuck at the bottom of this learning pit because we don't understand the work in front of us. Learning happens and occurs as we try to move ourselves out of the pit. We figure out what is going to work to solve our problem and what does not. Once we take that final step out, we understand the work and are ready for our next pit!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to tutor students at the k-6th level because I have a type 03, k-9 teaching certificate. I have learned and practiced the latest techniques and theories about student learning in all subjects at the elementary level. Since beginning graduate school I have taken courses in literature, the arts, and social studies. I am currently taking courses in elementary math, reading and writing, and general elementary education courses.
Not only do I have the education, but I also have the experience as well. For the past 8 years, I have worked with children 5-12 in various capacities either as a tutor, summer school teacher, camp counselor, or mentor. I have worked with students from all different backgrounds with varying academic needs and successes. All of these experiences have helped me to build a toolbox full of ideas to encourage and help create success in all students. When tutoring with your young student, I will cater your students need using the tools I have already learned as well as creating fresh ideas and activities that will provide success to your student.
As a first grade teacher, I teach phonics on a daily basis. I believe that integrating phonics instruction with language arts teaching is imperative to keep phonics relevant to student learning. As a tutor, I use games, worksheets, and word studies to help students develop phonemic awareness and increase their fluency.
