Wartburg College Waverly Iowa (Religion)
I love learning and teaching. I love the thrill of mastering a new subject, expanding my view of the world and seeing how different ideas manifest in different subjects. I love being able to take a complex idea and communicate it in a way that makes sense to other people. But it wasn't always this way.
In school I was mostly bored. I never felt challenged and the information I was expected to regurgitate didn't fascinate me. It wasn't until I was out of College that I really discovered how much I loved learning. The freedom to study what I wanted to study, at the depth I wanted to study it at, has been liberating. In many ways I am learning everything I thought I knew all over again.
I am a fan of the Classical approach to education -- the Trivium. The Trivium consists of three stages: grammar, logic and rhetoric. In plain English, I believe in first mastering the facts, then assembling them into logical order and, finally, expressing an intelligent and forceful opinion about those facts. I believe this method to be the single most effective way of educating students... of any age.
If you are an adult who wants to learn a new skill, subject or hobby, then I want to be there with you to coach and encourage. If you are a parent looking for someone to awaken a love for learning and life in your child, then I want to be their mentor. Our world is beautiful and fascinating and it is my goal to stir up wonder and excitement even as we progress towards mastery.
As a Pastor, my training revolved almost exclusively around the Humanities. Every week I get the opportunity to sharpen my ability to think and communicate. I am immersed in language and ideas and understand how powerful words can be in shaping beliefs, attitudes and actions. Our world has been shaped by the beliefs of those who have gone before us -- ideas they were willing to die or kill for. Therefore, understanding the ideas that have shaped our past and influence our present is the only way to create a future worth living in. At its core, English is the ability to think deeply, write clearly and communicate passionately about our most powerful possessions -- our ideas. I have a reverence for words and their use which will help any student, no matter how old, communicate to those around them with precision and excellence.
Of course, the Trivium template applies to every field, not just English and I have a wide ranging appetite for knowledge. If you are interested in pursuing a mastery of a subject, no matter how eclectic, please let me know because I may be able to help, or at least point you in the right direction. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a B.A. in Religion from Wartburg College in Waverly, IA. I have also served as the Senior Pastor for Vineyard Community Church in Waverly, IA since 2012. I regularly lead Bible Studies for my congregation and would like to be available to tutor anyone who shows interest.
I serve as the Senior Pastor for Vineyard Community Church in Waverly, IA which means I give a public address of 20-30 min. every week. My livelihood depends on my ability to communicate and motivate through speaking and have worked hard to hone that skill set throughout my tenure. The structure of a sermon is similar to any other speaking event -- one must communicate clearly and convincingly while reaching the audience's minds and hearts.
