About Sam

Hello, my name is Sam R. and I'm currently a law student at the University of Iowa College of Law. I just finished up my first year and am currently in Des Moines for an internship. Before that, I worked for a year in a Cedar Rapids law firm, and before that, I graduated from Stetson University, the oldest and most prestigious private school in the state of Florida. While I don't put much stock in grades per se, I have had considerable academic success throughout college. I finished with a 3.9 GPA, which was the highest of all students in the very rigorous and challenging Political Science department. My senior thesis, which was a 34-page evaluation of the war in Iraq, received the highest marks of any of my fellow classmates. I was also a perennial Honor Roll-Deans List member. Enough about credentials, however; to me they're just numbers, and very much overrated in comparison with a person taken as a whole.

I've always had a passion for learning, and yet this passion is indistinguishable from the passion to share what I've learned with others. The active and curious mind is never content with simply absorbing information; it wants to share and articulate what has been learned in a clear, positive manner. I chose political science because I thought it was the best blend of my various interests and strengths, namely: strong verbal and reading/writing skills, a deep fascination with history and current events, and the interpersonal element that shapes society in such profound ways.

I believe that every student has the raw tools to be successful academically; this is my first premise as a tutor. Following from this, it is of the foremost importance that the student believes in their own ability to learn and to be successful. My 'style', as it were, is upbeat and positive. I am a clear communicator, and my goal is to communicate to the student their tremendous value as a thinker and a learner. My second premise is that all knowledge is connected, even if in a tangential sense. In another words, I intend to draw meaningful connections between whatever subject I am tutoring, related subjects and disciplines, and the student's broader interests. Finally, I aim to make the given subject as real as possible to the student. While this does not mean I will stray from the fundamental theoretical or abstract principles of a discipline, it does mean that I will strive to show practical applications wherever possible, and to stress the importance of the work to the life and history of the individual.

Lastly, a brief word on yours truly. Those who know me would say that I'm very kind and agreeable, easy to converse with, and that I care deeply about people. I was and still am a (recreational) athlete, and so there is a certain competitive side of me that refuses to accept failure. At the same time, I understand that failure is intrinsic to the learning process. In the context of tutoring, then, my competitiveness translates to me doing everything I can to make sure the student will succeed at what they are doing.

Approved subjects

If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Good Tutor — I was very nervous when I started with a tutor. My fears disappeared when Sam R. met with me the past three sessions. He not only told me what I needed to work on, but he also complimented me on the novel I am writing. That impressed me. I am not only learning my weaknesses and working on those, I am also learning what my strengths are. I like my tutor very much and am glad to be working with ...
