I'm Rachel, a recent graduate with a passion for teaching and learning. I have experience working with young children, teaching college public speaking labs, as well as tutoring high-school age ESL students. In graduate school, I successfully instructed public speaking for two years. One of my favorite professors once told me that best teachers are not the ones who teach certain materials or theories, but rather "the best teachers teach STUDENTS." That motto has helped me to remember to personalize lessons and ignite a love of learning in all of my students. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
While in high school and early college, I both nannied and tutored two elementary age boys for 5 years. These boys were 2-3 years apart in age and possessed very different levels of understanding. I was successful in helping both boys learn by considering their unique abilities and perspectives.
