My passion for teaching and mentoring young people stems from my own experience growing up in a household with a mom who was a pre-school teacher and nurtured my own personal love of learning and school. As a professional and life long learner I have worked in both corporate and non-profit organizations over the past 25 years, and no matter where I find myself on my career path, it is the mentoring and guiding of young people, and interns that is touted most often from friends and colleagues as one of my greatest strengths.
As an engaged volunteer with several K-12 mentoring, reading, and school-to-work programs throughout my career, as well as professional adviser at a university level, I enjoy nothing more than to discover and nurture the unique traits and abilities of each individual student to help them realize their dreams and, equally important, enjoy the learning experience along the way. I set high standards for myself and expect the best from my students. I strive to keep the student challenged, but not overwhelmed, and to make the learning experience enjoyable.
I specialize in reading, writing, vocabulary, and spelling, and have nurtured these skills through many years of background working as a communications professional and student reading mentor.
I am an avid reader and writer with a particular passion for elementary level education. Writing has always been the way I express myself best, and I enjoy the challenge of helping students discover and hone the particular skill sets of handwriting, spelling, and reading. Young children have an amazing capacity for learning and my goal is to help them connect with the information in ways that make sense to them and that will help them study for retention and recall of knowledge for tests and for the long term.
I believe that my job as a tutor is to discover the unique learning traits of the student, and utilize those to bring forward results through new ways of thinking and solutions that may work when traditional classroom education is not quite enough. In lieu of a formal teaching degree, my creative and professional background allow me to think differently and do just that.
While I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I try to be flexible with time and I do offer make up classes. I look forward to hearing from you.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
