Greetings and salutations!

I have a Creative Writing MFA and a passion for the written word. I love helping others improve their reading and writing abilities, figure out all those tricky parts of speech, and build their vocabularies. No matter what field of study you're pursuing, the skills required to communicate intelligently and understand others will serve you well.

During my own education, I helped friends and classmates with grammar questions, essay and story structure, characterization, and other writing- and reading- related concerns. Now that I've graduated, I find myself missing the experience and would like to find others to assist in exploring these subjects.

I'm open to various methods of study. Everyone learns differently, and we're all at different places in terms of skills and experience.

We can focus on assigned school work, or we can set up an independent course of reading and exercises to strengthen skills with which you're having trouble. I can assign creative writing prompts and we can discuss the results, work on making your strengths even stronger, pinpoint your areas of struggle and figure out new angles for approaching them. We can read books or short stories together and work on reading comprehension (and read some awesome literature, which is worthwhile all by itself!). If applicable, we can work on areas that tend to be especially tough for those whose first language isn't English. If you REALLY want to, we can even diagram sentences. ;)

We can meet in person at a library or a quiet cafe. We can talk via Skype or Google Hangouts. We can exchange e-mails or talk on the phone. We can arrange our sessions in whatever way you feel most comfortable and productive.

I'm open to students of all ages, and I'm open to negotiating my hourly rate depending on what kind of tutoring is needed. Let me know what you're looking for, and we can discuss the possibilities!

Reading

During my academic career (which includes an undergraduate focus on English/literature and a graduate focus on creative writing), I took numerous courses focused on reading and reading-related skills. In my composition and literature classes, I teach students how to read closely and critically. I have experience tutoring in this subject as well and have worked with both children and adults to improve their reading strategies.
Study Skills,

Study Skills

I have helped various students with very different learning styles and strengths develop study skills that fit their specific needs. I believe that there are certain basic study skills that are useful for everyone to learn, and that beyond those skills it's best to create study habits based on the individual and what s/he is studying--best practices may differ, for example, based on whether the student is learning in a highly-structured classroom environment or in the more self-directed setting of an online course.
Vocabulary,

Vocabulary

I have a BA in English from Alfred University and an MFA in Writing from California College of the Arts. I've also been fascinated by new words. I try to expand my vocabulary on a regular basis. When I read, I write down any word I don't know (or don't know very well!) and make vocabulary flashcards for myself when I finish reading. I love working on vocab!
