About Simon

I am a recent graduate of Cornell College, Cum Laude, with a dual major in Physics and Computer Science. I have plenty of experience and knowledge in the more Mathematical side of STEM, and am able to tutor most subjects in Physics and Computer Science at a college level. My aim, as a tutor, is to help students justify their decision to seek out one on one help, utilizing the strength of these personal meetings to improve performance in problem areas that teachers and self study have failed to properly address. More than this, I enjoy incorporating the strengths of those I tutor directly into lesson plans, focusing first on what they know, what they need, and what I can do to leave them more confident in their studies.

--- Math and STEM
Math is unavoidable in STEM, and in school in general, but I don't believe that it has to be painful. The
majority of those I've talked to about math have had miserable experiences with teachers in the past,
or were perhaps never taught in a way that suited their actual needs. I like to treat the teaching of mathematics less as a series of facts to memorize, and more as the building of strong habits, guiding one's way to logically approach problem solving. I enjoy working with others to find their personal path to both understand their material, and to truly respect or even enjoy it.

--- Standardized Tests
Testing strategies may vary, but many remain relevant to nearly all those in common use. You can read many of these in test prep booklets, or for free online, but even to those well versed in tips and tricks, it can be difficult to put knowledge into actual practice. I can help with the actual implementation of strategy, helping students learn when their knowledge is actually relevant, what to do with it, and how to properly pore through the myriad facts they are expected to know to score highly. I have taken the SAT and the GRE general tests, scoring in or above the 98th percentile for both, and can offer ample advice for improving scores in these, or others.

I encourage any student potentially interested in my services to contact. My schedule is quite flexible, and I can very often adapt to your needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have been both actively studying and teaching standardized testing strategies for nearly 8 years. While students have likely read and implemented many of these strategies, I can aid in learning how to use them efficiently, helping students learn when their knowledge is actually relevant, what to do with it, and how to properly pore through the myriad facts they are expected to know to score highly. I have taken the SAT and the GRE general tests, scoring in or above the 98th percentile for both, and can offer ample advice for improving scores in these, or others.

Computer Science

I have taken many college courses in this field during the process of earning my major. Most of my tutoring experience also relates to this field, as most struggling students I've worked with have been fellow CS majors. Examples of upper level courses I have excelled in are Algorithms and Data Structures, Organization, and Networks; I have also performed personal research into theory. I am a recent graduate of Cornell College, Cum Laude, with a dual major in Physics and Computer Science.

GRE

I have aided many of my peers with GRE prep, helping to apply testing strategies, reviewing common problem structures, and going over relevant material. After putting my own knowledge of the test into practice, I was able to score well above the 90th percentile on each section. I can help with any particular areas you might be struggling with, and promise to help raise your test scores into the range you're looking for.

Java

I have ample experience with Java, both in programming myself and teaching one to one; I have used it in many courses and personal projects, including research performed in tandem with professors. Java is the language I am most comfortable teaching, and any facet of the language you might struggle with, be it syntax, program architecture, object oriented design, or quirks of Java 8, I can help.

Physics

One of my majors is in Physics, and it remains a personal passion of mine. I have served, many times, both as a student and a tutor in the pursuit of my degree, and am comfortable teaching a wide array of subjects within the field.
