About Amber

Hello, thank you for taking the time to review my tutoring profile. As a trained educational professional I understand that sometimes we all need a little extra practice and not every person learns the same way. I have worked with students of all ages, from kindergarten to college level, in the past few years. Learning new things is one of my passions and I enjoy getting to share this passion with others. My goal is to inspire students to find joy in learning.

Recently, I served as an on campus math tutor through the University of Northern Iowa for two years. This position specialized in elementary math concepts. In 2014, I earned a BA in Elementary Education with a minor in educational technology. My training courses have allowed me to have opportunities to teach children of various backgrounds in core content areas. Although my degree is in elementary education, please note that I am willing to tutor students beyond grade 6. Remember, practice makes progress!

I have taken a number of mathematics courses throughout my educational career (i.e. College Algebra, Calculus I, Elementary Mathematics for Educators, Geometry, Statistics, Algebraic Thinking, Math Reasoning I & II). These classes have prepared me as a teacher and tutor. As a mathematics tutor, I help explore different strategies for solving problems. Math is one of those subjects where there are alternate avenues for arriving at the same solution. My goal is to help students find what works best for them. In addition to helping students use different strategies, the use of manipulatives such as base ten blocks, algebra tiles, and other concrete objects can be used in my tutoring sessions. Manipulatives are great learning tools to help "visualize" math problems.

As an elementary education tutor I am personable and patient. These characteristics are just a couple of the attributes one needs in order to teach children. My degree training has developed many skills to qualify me as an elementary education tutor. My training has increased my knowledge on subject content, classroom management, diverse learners, and how to engage learners.

If you are at all interested in my services as a tutor please contact me for more information. I am willing and ready to help in any way possible to make your child's learning experience a great one. I am a firm believer that practice makes progress. Thank you for taking the time to review my tutoring profile.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

By completing my Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education I am qualified to tutor in this specific field. My training has allowed me to increase my knowledge in mathematics, science, social studies, and language arts. I have had several hours of field experience with students in grades K-6 teaching core content subjects. My full time student teaching experience allowed me to plan and teach lessons, and assess student learning.

Study Skills

My college training in education taught numerous study skills for helping students become successful learners. When tutoring any subject I always encourage students to have a plan and goal in mind. This will keep students on task and focused on the content being studied. Reviewing class notes before the study period begins will refresh the student's mind before delving deeper into material. It is also important for students not to cram too much content into one study session. They may become overwhelmed with the material. I have implemented these study skills with my students and I believe that they have gained confidence when preparing for exams.
