I have lots of experience from teaching in public school, homeschooling and tutoring. While I've liked it all, I especially enjoy concentrating with one student at a time and addressing their particular needs. And it works!
I'll work patiently and kindly but progress steadily toward our goal(s). I'm conscientious: I think about your student between sessions and carefully prepare for our next session. I'll communicate with you between sessions as much as you want.
We can study in my home near Maxwell, IA (you may sit in an adjoining room or right in the room with us) or I'll meet you at a public library.
My hourly fee depends on how much driving I'll do and if I need to purchase things to use. I've set $40.00 as an arbitrary amount to meet Wyzant's requirements.
I hope to hear from you! I'll meet you before we begin tutoring sessions at no charge: we'll see if your student and I are a good match; then determine your goal(s) and what materials we'll use.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've studied the requirements of the common core extensively and even written them out and keep them with me at all tutoring sessions. I know that I can access them for any grade level to be on track with new students as I plan lessons geared to achieving those particular goals.
I've planned and taught lessons to meet those criteria from 1st grade through 10th grade and could go beyond 10th grade if the need arises.
I use curriculum that corresponds to the Common Core.
I have B.S.E from Drake in Elementary Ed. I've taught 5th and 6th grades in public school. I home-schooled my own children in all the elementary grades as well as high school subjects.
I have Math skills that I apply daily. I can explain 'how to' in Math clearly and can readily and credibly demonstrate the usefulness of applied Math.
Every kind of elementary Science is interesting to me: plants, weather, geology, astronomy, reptiles and amphibians, insects, birds, oceanography, deserts, physiology, etc. I have many demonstrations and experiments to accompany tutoring in Science. I designed and implemented the Science curriculum for 5th and 6th grades.
Using good grammar is important to me. It's something I'm interested in imparting to students, too. I've successfully taught grammar throughout years of homeschooling my own children.
I've taught handwriting in public school and to my own children when I home-schooled them. I have good penmanship myself. I believe in the importance of legible handwriting.
I have a good understanding of phonics. I've used phonetic-based methods for teaching reading. I've observed that phonetic knowledge enables reading success! I'm also able to teach students who read whole words instead of using phonics.
I've studied piano since I was eight years old. I've accompanied choirs in school and at church for many years as well as soloists and ensembles. I accompany congregational singing in our church and play prelude and offertory every week. I play for weddings and funerals. I teach piano lessons and have many successful students.
Teaching my sons to read is one of the thrills of my lifetime! Following a plan carefully, seeing the daily improvements that resulted and now knowing that they are good readers is solid evidence of our diligence. I'm very interested in and enthused about teaching children how to develop this essential and enjoyable skill!
I've taught Spelling in public school as well in homeschooling my own children. I can tailor a Spelling curriculum to fit a particular child's learning style. Together we can master those weekly Spelling tests!
I like words - what they mean, why they're spelled as they are, how to use them correctly and advantageously! A good vocabulary goes hand in hand with reading and spelling - all work together to enhance communication. I've successfully taught Vocabulary as a separate subject and along with Reading and Spelling.
I've sung in choirs and ensembles for many years. I'm a piano teacher and accompanist. I'm a former public school teacher and presently tutor in many subjects.
I have written papers for college courses getting excellent grades and praise for my writing skill; I've been a feature writer for a highschool newspaper and handle all correspondence for our family business.
Whatever is required for your portfolios, I'm confident that we can craft what's needed.
