Mount Mercy Colege/Univ of Iowa (English, Elem Ed)
I got my teaching degree in English and Elementary and Secondary Education. I spent 14 years teaching in a school setting until I quit to raise my own family. Since then I have worked in childcare both preschool and school age. While teaching I taught grades 4-8. I taught all subjects but the ones I enjoyed the most were the English, grammar, and reading. I will not limit myself to just those subjects.
I love working with children. I feel that I have knowledge to share and would do a wonderful job helping anybody who needed it. When I worked with school age children they loved having me help them with spelling, math, etc. Children all learn in different ways, some even visually, and you need to know how to teach to that.
I love to read and enjoy sharing that with others, especially children.
I spent a lot of time in the classroom and have a lot of knowledge of the subject material. I am a very proficient speller and know how to help children who struggle with these subjects. I've worked with children in Title I reading and know what it takes to bring reading levels up.
I will do my best to help any child achieve the goals they are looking for. It is most frustrating for a child to not be able to read as well as their friends or to be in a lower reading level when their friends are way ahead of them. There is no problem so large that we can't work through it together. Part of success is building confidence and being able to say, "I can do it." In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
