University of Iowa (Elementary Education)
I am a senior attending the University of Iowa. I will be graduating in December of 2016 with a degree in Elementary Education. I have ample experience in the classroom (about 400 hours teaching/volunteering). I have spent a lot of time in the Iowa City Community School District, at Kirkwood, Lucas, Twain, and Garner Elementary. In the fall, I will be student teaching in a 2nd grade classroom at Borlaug Elementary, and will be certified to teach in my own classroom by the Spring.
During my time at the University, I also earned a certificate in Cultural Competency through the School of Social Work. I am a huge believer in the importance of differentiation in the classroom. I believe that all students are different and have the ability to learn in varying ways; therefore, as an educator, it is my goal to get to know my students, understand their needs, and teach them in a way that they learn best, in order for them to achieve academic success and help them reach their personal goals.
I have seen a lot of students written work both in person, as well as samples throughout my classes at the University. I have studied the meaning of why students write the things that they do, as well as discuss their reflection of their work. I have worked with students on the importance of editing and revising their work, as well as their peers for good feedback. I also have worked with students on reading, both aloud and independently. This semester, I led a 5th grade lit circle, which was extremely fun. I enjoy making engaging lessons for reading and writing for my students, so they enjoy learning.
I have ample experience in the classroom, working with students from k-6th grade for the last three years. I have also observed and taught lessons in each subject, as well as taken method courses at the University for each Elementary subject. I love getting to know my students, what their learning styles are, and create fun lessons for them that focus on helping them reach their learning goals.
I am looking forward to this opportunity of meeting new students and helping them progress as life long learners. I am a senior attending the University of Iowa. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have completed my Elementary Education courses through the College of Education at the University of Iowa. Coming this fall I will be student teaching in a 2nd grade classroom. I have spent many hours in many classrooms grades k-6, and have planned many lessons for individuals, small groups, and whole class. I have taken methods courses for each elementary subject, which had a practicum teaching experience attached to it. I am grateful for these experiences that have prepared me to work with students.
