About Emily

I am an adjunct professor of Philosophy at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas. I have been teaching philosophy for 3 years, including two years as a grad student at the University of Iowa (which is a large research institution and considered a public Ivy). Because of these experiences, and also because I am naturally a non-judgmental person, I am comfortable with a wide variety of students and different learning styles.

Teaching in a way that actually helps students learn is my passion, and I excel at communicating difficult material in easy-to-understand ways; in fact, in my short career, I have already received a selective teaching award -- Outstanding Teaching Assistant at the University of Iowa.

Many students come to me for logic help, as this is the most difficult part of philosophy at the introductory level. I have taught two semesters of college-level logic, and have received As in introductory, intermediate, and advanced level logic courses, including specialized topics such as modal and mathematical logic. I am also well-versed in almost every philosophical subject at the introductory level. Additionally, I have publications in Metaphysics and Eastern Philosophy and have presented conference work in Early Modern Philosophy; these areas are my special strengths.

In addition to my experience with Philosophy, I have a wide variety of other intellectual interests, which means that I am capable of tutoring many different subjects. For instance, in addition to my Philosophy degrees, I also have a graduate degree in Linguistics, and I have taken advanced coursework in several other areas. While I am most educated in Philosophy, Logic, English, Writing, and Linguistics, I am also competent to tutor beginner to intermediate level Spanish, a variety of subjects in History, beginner Music Theory, Literature, Poetry, etc. Please contact me if you are curious whether I can help you learn something.

Since adjunct instructing does not make a great deal of money, I supplement my income by freelance writing. This means that writing well is quite literally my bread and butter. I have taken advanced classes in writing, and all of my degrees have required extensive research and writing experience. Also, I have been using Microsoft Office for over 20 years, in every version since it was first released. I use Microsoft Word extensively and regularly for paper writing and for freelancing. This means that I can also help you with writing papers, formatting, and general Office applications.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

HTML

I am a freelance web developer with proficiency in HTML5, CSS3, CSS frameworks like Bootstrap, Bulma, and Foundation, JavaScript, and JQuery.

Logic

I have taught Principles of Reasoning (an introductory logic course) at the University of Iowa for two semesters. I have also taken (and received As in) undergraduate coursework in Symbolic Logic and Mathematical Logic, and graduate-level coursework in Modal Logic and Philosophy of Logic.

Religion

I teach an Introduction to World Religions class at a community college, and have a published professional paper contrasting two ancient Indian religions.
