About Alejandro

I currently work as an Adjunct Mathematics Instructor at Kirkwood Community College in Iowa City. I also serve as an Adjunct Mathematics Instructor at the University of Iowa in the fall semesters.

I have loved tutoring mathematics since I was in high-school. I'm from a family of teachers, and I've learned that everything they told me about how rewarding helping others learn is true. Mathematics is such a beautiful subject, but often times students are too frustrated with continual poor-grades that they begin to believe they "can never learn it". In my experience, many teachers do not find ways to explain mathematical concepts in more ways than their textbook explains it, which does not illuminate the idea for each and every student. I enjoy working with each individual tutee on figuring out how to best explain each mathematical concept, so that their understandings can build off one another.

I have been a private tutor in mathematics in San Francisco, CA, from August 2009 - May 2012, and continued tutoring privately, as well as at the tutoring center at the University of Iowa, from August 2012 through the present. I have also taught and graded various mathematics classes at the University of Iowa and Kirkwood CC such as; Pre-Algebra, College Algebra, Mathematics for Biological Sciences (Pre-Calculus), Calculus II, Introduction to Geometry for Educators, and Partial Differential Equations (taught to Engineering students). As a private tutor, I have taught courses ranging from Pre-Algebra to post-graduate level mathematics.

I am qualified to tutor in the following subjects: High School Algebra (I and II), Precalculus, Calculus (both AP classes, as well as the full spectrum of college calculus classes), Differential Equations (both Ordinary or Partial DE's), Geometry, Linear Algebra, Probability, Financial Mathematics and even select subjects beyond these.

Please feel free to contact me to discuss what I can do to help you improve your mathematical skills, to see if I would be a good tutor for you, and even begin setting up tutoring lessons. Thank you, and good luck!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I have tutored a total of 14 students in ACT Math from 2009-present, and all but one of those students placed in the 80th percentile or higher for the mathematics portion. I have also tutored each of the six individual concept areas independently of the ACT test (pre-algebra, elementary algebra, intermediate algebra, coordinate geometry, plane geometry, and trigonometry), while also teaching both geometry and trigonometry at the University of Iowa.

Actuarial Science

I have taken and passed the first two actuarial exams: SOA Exam P (July 2015) and SOA Exam FM (August 2015). I have also perviously served as a private tutor (for an entire academic year) for an introduction to probability class that covered all materials covered on Exam P.

Calculus

While receiving my M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Iowa I was the TA for both a Calculus I & II class, and I also worked in the mathematics tutorial lab on campus which tutored all levels of calculus offered. Independently I have tutored each level of Calculus (single variable, integration techniques and applications, and multivariable calculus), including preparing high school students for both the AP Calculus AB and BC exams. I myself passed AP Calculus AB with a score of 5 in my junior year of high school.

Differential Equations

I took 4 Differential Equations classes as an undergraduate and graduate student in mathematics (ODE/PDE sequences as an undergraduate and graduate student respectively). While at the University of Iowa I also graded a Differential Equations class for engineering undergraduate students (an Introduction to ODEs), and tutored this subject in the university's mathematics tutorial laboratory.

Linear Algebra

While obtaining my MS in Mathematics at the University of Iowa, I tutored the university's Linear Algebra course while working in their Mathematics Tutorial Lab. I have also taken two linear algebra courses (one as an undergrad, and one as a graduate student), receiving an A in both courses.

Precalculus

I have taught two Pre-Calculus classes while working at the University of Iowa, while obtaining my M.S. in Mathematics from there. I have also tutored 12 individual students in Precalculus (both high school and college students) in my 5+ years of tutoring experience.

Alejandro saved the day!

Great pre calculus tutor. My son was sick and missed his instructions for the chapter his was on. Got on WyzAnt and Alejandro responded right away. My son said compared to other tutors, Alejandro really had his act together. I was impressed that he carried multiple math textbooks including the one my son used. Very impressive!
