I graduated from Iowa State University with a B.S. degree in Biochemistry and Genetics. I graduated magna cum laude and have been recognized by the Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics and Molecular Biology as well as the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences several times over for my academic achievement. The rigors of the biochemistry and genetics co-curricula at ISU have given me the opportunity to truly understand the basic sciences (chemistry, biology, math, etc).

I have tutored since 2012 - and have tutored in subjects as algebra, calculus, biology, chemistry, genetics, organic chemistry, and others. I am a published scientist and have over four years of combined in-lab research experience at both Iowa State University and the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research at the University of Iowa - the latter being where my work was published. The focuses of my research have been ribonucleases in Arabidopsis thaliana, cyanoglobins in Synechocystis and anti-microbial activity of chemokines (specifically CXCL10) for dermal and oral microorganisms, mutant cyanoglobin strains of synechocystis, and rice/maize ferredoxin reductase coupling mechanisms.

I enjoy tutoring organic chemistry more than any other subject for a number of reasons:
(1) I believe most professors teach the course in a way that does not set up the vast majority of their students for success
(2) While being a subject area filled with challenging concepts, it is also full of patterns and trends that can make learning the material much easier
(3) I take a student-centered approach that teaches the material in the way which I, when I was a student, wish it had been taught

I am currently in my second year in dental school at the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. That being said, I am very comfortable with providing tutoring and guidance for students preparing to take the DAT. My academic average on the DAT was a 24 which is in the 99th percentile nationally. Additionally, my PAT score on the DAT was a 27 which is in the 99.9th percentile nationally. I have tons of tips and tricks for each of the sections and can point you towards excellent resources (many of which are free) that helped me, and students of mine, crush the DAT.

If you have any questions about my experience, my teaching style, or anything else - don't be a stranger!

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

During my undergraduate training at Iowa State University, I took collegiate level math courses through Calculus III and my overall GPA for these courses was a 3.87. When it comes to mathematics, I believe the best way to learn the material is an approach that builds on prior knowledge and one that utilizes LOTS of practice problems.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

I took a myriad of chemistry courses while completing my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry and Genetics at Iowa State University. These courses included Advanced General Chemistry, Qualitative Analysis, Organic Chemistry, and Physical Chemistry (Quantum Mechanics and Thermodynamics). My GPA for these courses was 3.83 and I thoroughly enjoyed taking each and every one of them.

Dentistry

I am an accepted dental student and will be enrolled at the University of Iowa come the Fall of 2018. I have taken the DAT and scored an academic average of 24, true science of 23 and PAT of 27. I am also already approved to tutor in all of the subjects (outside of PAT) that are covered on the DAT.
Genetics,

Genetics

One of my two majors from Iowa State University was genetics. Some of the genetics courses I took included Principles of Genetics, Principles of Molecular Cell Biology, Molecular Genetics, Analytical Genetics and Evolutionary Genetics. Overall my GPA for genetics courses was a 4.00.
Organic Chemistry,

Organic Chemistry

I was first exposed to organic chemistry during my undergraduate training in Biochemistry and Genetics where I received A's in both Organic Chemistry I & II (as well as their corresponding labs). About halfway through my first semester of Organic Chemistry I learned how to best learn new Organic Chemistry material. By understanding and emphasizing some of the fundamentals, we can identify patterns and trends that make the subject material significantly easier than most professors (and students) make it out to be. I began tutoring organic chemistry shortly after and have been tutoring it ever since (over 4 years) - including over 1000 hours here on Wyzant's online platform alone! To further expand upon that - I don't believe that attempting to use rote memorization or flashcards is the best way to learn organic chemistry, rather, I believe that one should use the patterns and trends present to intuitively solve and work through any problem they are faced with. This is largely why I love teaching this subject so much - it's one big puzzle and I'm here to help you learn how to view it as such and then efficiently solve it.

Great PAT tutor

My first lesson with David was a success. We covered the PAT section of the DAT. He was extremely helpful and I could tell he had done this before. I am looking forward to future sessions.

Quick Teacher and Excellent for showing each step

He was able to teach me everything for my exam coming up in only two hours and taught it in a way I can understand rather than how the teacher did. It is better to see it from a students prospective rather than a teachers. He worked quickly and proficiently to ensure everything was covered.

Great Organic chem 2 tutor

David was awesome and helped me understand this very difficult subject. I struggled through o chem 1 and I don't think I could have make it through o chem 2 without him. I highly recommend David!!

Excellent Organic Chem tutor!

I was looking for a tutor to get ahead and stay ahead in a very abbreviated summer Honors Organic Chem class that I'm about to start. I have had two lessons on Organic Chemistry so far with David and am very pleased to have found him. David is intelligent, easy to work with, comes to lessons prepared and has done an excellent job pacing the material that we go over: he doesn't spend too long on a topic I've grasped, and is patient and thorough on topics that I am unfamiliar with. He is obviously extremely competent with the material. I'm going into my class with confidence and am looking forward to its successful completion. I highly recommend David for Orgo!

Amazing Organic Chemistry Tutor

David is a fantastic tutor. He is patient and encouraging - and he really demonstrates true mastery of the subject. I contacted David in the middle of my semester feeling confused and David completely put me on track for success. I wholeheartedly recommend him as a tutor to anyone who is looking to understand this notoriously confusing subject.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

David helped my son with 2nd semester Ochem. And my son said he wished his professor could teach as good as David. David is always prepared and willing to help. My son gained confidence and better grades after weekly session with David.
