Bio

My job is to help the student (you or a family member)--no matter what age--become equipped with strategies to make independent study easier. I do not want to take any more of your time and money than necessary.

I will first observe how the student approaches the subject (English or math) on his or her own, noting strengths and areas I can help strengthen. Then, I'll try out different methods and see what helps.

I will expect a lot of repetition in this skill building so that it will eventually stick and no help will be needed. Depending on what the student is studying, we may have to break things down and improve one aspect of study/learning at a time.

I welcome students who are native speakers of English or coming from any place on the planet where they learned any amount of English (including none at all).

I've done work as a technical writer, a freelance writer, a creative writer, an editor, a copy editor, a proofreader, an instructional designer, a high-school English teacher, an after-school teacher, and as a tutor of young children and adults who never learned to read or write.

I especially like to help anyone who feels they have been left behind, allowed to slip through the cracks. My general feeling is that a number of children and teens in school missed out on learning some crucial aspect of math or English for whatever reason (illness, tragedy . . . or just the need for more 1:1 instruction) and over time, the cumulative effect was such that they were thought to have a learning disability or ADD--when, while that may be true, they may have just needed some deep tutoring to allow them to get caught up to speed.

Most people feel immediately at ease with me (so I'm told).

I've adjusted my rate to the lowest I can charge via WyzAnt--but I will increase this rate after the first (trial) lesson (And, of course, if you aren't satisfied with this trial lesson, you don't even have to pay $15; according to Wyzant, you pay nothing in such a case!). We can discuss this if you are interested in continuing. I need there to be an understanding that any good tutor/teacher not only is spending time at a session with the student; he/she is spending time thinking about and planning the next lesson. Therefore, my hourly rate reflects this.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to working with you!

I have a master's in teaching English to high-schoolers, and I did teach at this level briefly before working as a technical writer, editor, and instructional designer to pay off my student loans. In recent years, I have served as a lead teacher in an after-school program for elementary-school aged children, tutored in this same capacity, and currently serve as an assistant pre-school teacher at Preucil School of Music.

ADHD

As a student teacher, I worked with a high-school student in Houston who had ADHD. I applied principles learned in my master's education program toward his reading of To Kill a Mockingbird--and he was pages ahead of the rest of the class. As an after-school lead teacher, I worked with an elementary student in Iowa City who had not spoken till age 7, was diagnosed with and taking medication for ADHD, and turned out to be dyslexic. Her reading comprehension improved, as did her ability to spell.
