In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I plan customized lessons for each student based off of their current level of English. My lessons usually combine a vocabulary section, a grammar section, and also an immersion section. I think that being immersed in a language is the best and most practical way to pick up a language, so I encourage my students to listen to the radio or watch TV to become familiar with pronunciation and American idioms. I also am open to, and encourage, going into the community with the student to help him or her with daily interactions. Such excursions could be to the grocery store, a restaurant, or the bank where the student can learn new vocabulary and practice conversation outside of the controlled tutoring environment.
