Mount Mercy College(University) (Elementary Education)
My name is Travis, and I am a teacher for the Benton Community School District. I currently teach fifth and sixth grade special education. I work with students who have slight learning disabilities in the areas of reading, math, writing, and social skills. I also coach 8th grade boys basketball.
I would like to find some tutoring opportunities over the summer to help keep students ahead of the game and prepare them for the next school year. I use a lot of different materials in my instruction that align with the new Iowa Core. I will work with students who have decoding issues, fluency issues, comprehension issues, number core issues, adding/subtracting/multiplication/division/telling time/fractions/money, etc.
There is nothing more rewarding for me then to see a student's light bulb go on after finally mastering a concept they have been struggling with for so long.

I am qualified to teach/coach basketball, because I currently hold a coaching certification from the State of Iowa. I have coached 8th grade boys basketball for the past three years at Benton Community and have compiled a 18-10 record over that time period. I also played college basketball for Mount Mercy College.
I currently hold a certified Iowa Teaching license and teach fifth and sixth grade special education. I also hold endorsements in the areas of special education and reading. I work with students in math, reading, and writing.
I played football from 7th grade through 12th grade for Anamosa High School. My team went undefeated in 7th and 8th grade. As seniors we made it to State with an overall record of 8-1 before losing to the eventual state champions in the playoffs. I played a wide range of positions including: quarterback, wide receiver, tight end, left tackle, and defensive end.
I was a four year letter winner in golf at Anamosa High School from 2002-2005. As a team we made two state tournaments finishing 8th and 6th respectively. As a senior I was medalist runner up at Sectionals and placed 10th at Districts.
I went on to play college golf for Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids for 3 years. I was a two time letter winner while playing college golf.
I teach phonics on a daily basis in my classroom. A lot of the students I work with struggle in the area of decoding. We use phonics strategies to help us decode words. I currently use a program called Corrective Reading to help students with phonics and decoding. I have seen an increase in each of my students since we have implemented Corrective Reading.
I have been teaching special education for the past 4 years. I have worked on average with about 17 students per year since becoming a teacher. Most of my students struggle in the areas of reading, math, and written language.
As a teacher, study skills is one of the most valuable skills you can teach your students. Knowing what to look for and how to remember it are important skills for each child as they go throughout school. Before tests/quizzes we always review what to look for in a test. Looking for key words and looking at what the question is asking for.
