About Trevor

Bio

I graduated from Yale University in 2013 with a degree in chemistry and spent six months after that tutoring and running a small business consigning used textbooks. I then made a leap to the consulting world, implementing HR/payroll software for mid-sized companies and using the same analytical skills valuable for math and science before settling down in southeast Iowa. I now manage the HR system for a company here and am getting back into tutoring now that I have more free time.

I have tutored extensively in multiple subjects including chemistry, physics, Latin, and math, from algebra 1 up through calculus. Beyond a solid understanding of the subjects and an ability to explain them simply and concisely, I have found that one of my greatest assets is my ability to relate to students and create a relaxed and fun atmosphere, even when dealing with difficult calculus problems.

While at Yale, I was awarded the Donald Annis prize for the best academic record in courses in English and German. I spent a summer in Berlin and still keep in touch with some of the friends I made there. Outside of the classroom, I was involved in a program that sends Yale students to tutor in local public schools, and through this program I gained experience working with all age groups (K-12), primarily in math and science.

During my time with this program, I learned a vital lesson: much more important than any academic knowledge or expertise is my ability to form a personal connection with students, and I pride myself on having a friendly and personable approach that allows for patience and understanding from both parties.

German,

German

I studied German extensively while in college and made straight A's in my German classes. I spent one summer of college in Berlin and developed a love of the language and culture that I tried to convey to other students of the language upon my return to the U.S. Based on my experience with the language, I've found that one of the best things I can do for a student is to speak as little English as possible, and I can do this easily because of my fluency with the language. It can be very difficult at first, but the more immersed the student is, the easier it becomes.

Writing

During my time at Yale, I wrote dozens of pages each semester for classes ranging from creative writing to chemistry labs. I worked with many students while there to edit their papers and make sure their writing was up to Yale's high standards. In my junior year, a research essay of mine was selected for entrance into Yale's annual Writing Contest.

Chemistry,

Chemistry

I have a B.S. in chemistry from Yale University. While there, I focused primarily on protein chemistry and biochemistry. When I was in high school, I received a 5 on the AP Chemistry exam and a score 770 on the SAT Chemistry subject test. I worked with many students on general chemistry problems while taking AP Chemistry.
SAT Math,

SAT Math

I received a 780 on the SAT Math test. I also received a score of 168 (max. score: 170) on the Quantitative Reasoning section of the GRE, which tests many of the same skills as the SAT. To help students do well on the SAT, I like to break down the problems by the skills they test, and work on these skills individually, based on the specific needs of the student.

We are very lucky to have found him

Trevor tutored my son in PreCal . He was punctual, friendly and caring. He helped him understand what he was missing. My son retook the test he originally failed and got an A. Trevor worked with him until he zeroed in on what he was missing. My son was reluctant to having a tutor in the beginning but quickly realized that he helped him greatly. We are very pleased and do recommend him highly.
