About Stacie

Hello! My name is Stacie. I have a Bachelor's of Science in Biology, with a minor in Psychology, from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. I work as a corporate level Microbiologist for an international food manufacturer. I am authorized as a substitute teacher by the state of Iowa. I am also a member of Mensa, as well as a continuing education student.

I have a passion for learning, and I love to see kids get excited about learning, too. I have many teachers in my family and have often been told that I would make a great teacher because of my patience and ability to simplify explanations. Having studied biology in college, subjects related to biology would be what I would feel most comfortable tutoring, but I would be willing to work in other areas of science as well as English.

Please contact me if you feel that I would suit you and your child's tutoring needs!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

My standardized test scores in English have always ranked in the 98th percentile or better. One of my college professors told me that she hoped I was planning to go into a career in writing, because she enjoyed my work so much. I enjoy getting kids excited about reading and writing, and have given advice to fellow students that have helped improve their writing grades.

Fellow students often sought my assistance in understanding assignments and concepts. I have a knack for explaining things in ways children can easily understand, and enjoy coming up with hands-on projects to engage them in learning.

Genetics

I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Nebraska. I worked for a year as a volunteer at the Henry Doorly Zoo in the genetics lab doing DNA extractions and PCRs. The testing was in conjunction with the Madagascar Biodiversity Trust project, identifying related animals for breeding purposes in Madagascar (mostly lemurs), as well as determining paternity of captive animals at the zoo.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Nebraska. Fellow students often sought my assistance in understanding assignments and concepts. I have worked as a volunteer at the Henry Doorly Zoo in the Genetics lab doing DNA extractions and PCRs, and as a chemistry lab technician. I am currently employed as a Microbiologist at an international food processing company.

Physiology

I studied Biology, including Physiology, at the University of Nebraska. Fellow students often sought my assistance in understanding assignments and concepts.

Psychology

I studied Psychology at UNO. When I graduated, I received a BS in Biology with a minor in Psychology.

Reading

From the time I learned to read, I was a voracious reader. Most of my free time in elementary school was spent with a book. I read with a flashlight under the covers at night after I was told to go to bed, I read at the dinner table (which I know now is rude), and I even read in the bathtub. I'd rush through my classwork so I could have free reading time. All of this reading gave me an outstanding basis for spelling, grammar, writing, and vocabulary skills, all of which I've excelled at all of my life. My standardized test scores in reading have always ranked in the 98th percentile or better. I enjoy getting kids excited about reading, and have given advice to fellow students that have helped improve their writing grades.

Spelling

My appetite for books gave me an early advantage in developing spelling skills. Spelling is about general rules and exceptions, not memorization. I know the rules for spelling and can present them in a way that makes spelling come more naturally.

Vocabulary

I fondly remember in the 4th grade when I met my best friend and she told me, "Stop using such big words, I can't understand you". I have always had an extensive vocabulary, which is reflected in my standardized test scores, ranking in the 98th percentile or better. I enjoy getting kids excited about reading and teaching them how to learn new words through sentence context.

Writing

My standardized test scores in English have always ranked in the 98th percentile or better. One of my college professors told me that she hoped I was planning to go into a career in writing, because she enjoyed my work so much. I enjoy getting kids excited about reading and writing, and have given advice to fellow students that have helped improve their writing grades.
