About Elizabeth

As a Deaf advocate, my focus is serving the needs of the Deaf community. One of the biggest needs in the deaf community is qualified and professional interpreters. I view education as the most important element for interpreters. I want to tutor because I feel so strong about educated interpreters. My passion is bridging the gap between the hearing and deaf communities. My goal is to teach individuals wanting learn sign language and improve in their signing skills or to tutor students seeking to become interpreters.
I have nearly 2 decades of experience from a variety of different learning environments pertaining to Sign Language, including professional training at Scott Community College. I have added experience on the job and with the Deaf community, I also have 19 years of education and experience as a volunteer Bible teacher. I have taken my experience and tailored the lessons to match the individual needs of my students.
For 7 years, I have been teaching Deaf as well as hearing individuals sign language and also those with special needs to communicate. I certified as a Baby Signs Instructor in June of 2011. Baby Signs is a program that utilizes flash cards with DVDs. It teaches parents to communicate through sign language with their baby. (hearing or deaf) This serves as a means for the child to express needs and thoughts preceding the ability of speech. The program also involves group collaboration, called "play group". These are held in weekly meetings featuring differing topics per week and are tailored per age group.
