About Zachary

Hello student(s),

My name is Zach and I am interested in helping you become a stronger student in an out of the classroom. I have completed a Master's degree from the University of Northern Iowa in Organizational Communication. This required me to conduct large amounts of research and writing projects between coursework and various projects. While a graduate student, I had the opportunity to teach sections of the introductory communication course offered to incoming freshman at UNI. This class was a hybrid writing and public speaking course. These experiences helped me to work with students and faculty of different backgrounds and levels of education. I also love to read and research history and took multiple history classes while I was an undergraduate student at UNI.

Currently, I am teaching Public Speaking through Scott Community College in the Quad Cities Area in Iowa. These courses focus on research, writing, and of course, presenting.

Through my academic experiences, I am able to work with you on enhancing your writing and revising abilities when it comes to papers and class projects. This can come in the form of editing/revising class papers and projects, assisting in locating appropriate materials, and/or mock tests/essays to gauge the learning of the student. Specific tutoring methods will be subjective to the student and material they are learning in class.

When it comes to tutoring, I would prefer to meet with the student and/or parent at a location of their choosing conducive to both learning and comfort for the student/parent and myself. I am willing to work with the student as necessary to try and help ensure their academic success. Evenings are preferred for meeting times; Saturdays are negotiable.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Proofreading

As a student of Communication Studies, I have frequent experience with research, writing, and editing assignments. With my current teaching experiences, I help students proof their assignments as needed. Additionally, I continue to do academic research on the side to stay up-to-date on trends and keep maintain a clear focus on this area of academia.

Public Speaking

As a graduate student at the University of Northern Iowa, I taught three sessions of the Oral Communication course. This course is required for all incoming freshman or transfer students, and focuses on writing and speaking in front of your peers.

Currently I am teaching Public Speaking and Communication Skills through Scott Community College in Bettendorf, Iowa. Communication Skills is a hybrid English/Speech course focused primarily on business communication/professional speaking. Public Speaking focuses on building student competencies in creating, developing, and presenting unique and original presentations while developing skills in group work, informative speaking, and persuasion.

Reading

Not to sound redundant when comparing this section to other ones, but having a Master's degree requires the development, honing, and practice of many skills. One of these skills is reading. Anymore, people are becoming used to passive reading practices, resulting in a lack of focus, inability to recall information, or general disinterest. Reading for academia requires more than just glancing at the words on a page. It requires comprehension, interpretation, and engagement. I feel I am qualified in this area largely because of my student experiences. As a speech instructor, it is also important for me to be a comprehensive reader because it allows me to engage and assist my students in the course material and their speech topics.

Writing

Between being a student of communication and history, and now teaching Public Speaking, I have had many experiences in writing. My graduate coursework required continued and extensive research and writing. In regard to teaching, I need to be an effective writer as well. My lectures need to be grammatically and structurally sound in order to be an effective educator. Strong writing experiences is also important for speech because you need an understanding of language in order to be informative and persuasive in your writing/speaking.

I have also taught a Communication Skills course, which is listed as a hybrid English/Speech course. It emphasizes in business and professional writing, professional presentations, and workplace interactions.
