I myself had trouble learning to read as a young child. When the light finally went on for me, I ended up teaching my younger sister how to read out of a 2nd grade reader and print and write cursive before she was in 1st grade. I didn't want her to have the same struggles and experience that I had.
I truly empathize with students that are having challenges with reading or with communicating with others, especially if English is not their first language.
I'm a trained opera singer and actor, having traveled the U.S. and Canada in the national Broadway tour of The Phantom of the Opera for 12 years. Words, communication and not only being able to read but to have an understanding of what I'm reading and being able to interpret what I read, has been an essential tool for my career.
I am an accomplished bronze sculptor and artist. I have also written and illustrated a 48 page rhyming children's book.
I look for opportunities to be creative in everything I do…whether it's art, problem solving or teaching.
I have a deep desire to help young people and adults, alike, develop the confidence they need to communicate effectively and to be able to not just read the words on the page, but to understand and interpret what they are reading.
I'm a friendly person. I understand what it is like to struggle to keep up. I will always be supportive. If we find one approach isn't working, I'm creative enough to come up with other ways of communicating ideas, concepts and approaches to reading with understanding, and speaking with confidence.
The world is waiting to hear what you have to say and to hear your great ideas! I would be honored to help you on your journey.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been a paid professional artist most of my adult life. I feel that many objects that one would want to draw can be broken down into basic geometric shapes. A hand, for instance, the palm can be seen as a square, an articulated finger- as a cylinder, attached to a circle, attached to a shorter cylinder, attached to a smaller circle, then to a smaller cylinder for the tip of the finger. Mix in shading and highlighting as well as "intension" and with nuancing, you can create a believable hand, for instance.
I have been a paid professional actor/singer/all round performer for the past 20 years. I find that there are techniques and ways of approaching giving a speech that will put the speaker at ease as he/she is presenting AND that will allow the audience to understand and relate to what the speaker is saying. Body language, vocal projection, vocal inflection, eye contact, knowing what the key points of a speech are, serve as guides for both the speaker and the listener. Preparedness and the confidence that brings is key to the success of a public speaker.
I have been a professional opera singer, Broadway musical theater singer/actor for 20 years. I have sung roles with many opera companies around the country. As well, I was a cast member in the national Broadway tour of The Phantom of the Opera, touring the U.S. and Canada 365 days a year for 12 years. I have seen/experienced/lived theater from the inside out and have been paid very well for my efforts. I have a great artistic and technical eye when it comes to assessing and over all production or watching a performer creating a role and telling a believable story.
I have a Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Converse College. I have been a professional singer and actor for the past 20 years. I love to listen, encourage, and problem solve to help bring out the very best in a singer's NATURAL voice. Some of the most important qualities in becoming a great singer are: being able to match pitch, understand and incorporate the concepts of relaxed and deep "supported" breathing, learning how to sing with an accompanist, and understanding that singing is so close to "speaking" and that some people make it much harder than it needs to be.
