Ashford University (Social Science)
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Social Service with an emphasis in Human Services, from Ashford University in Clinton Iowa. I enjoy interaction with people and have a long history of working with children in an educational type of setting.
As a high school student, I was a member of the Future Teachers Association. One year I worked with sixth grade students in a small group setting to help improve their spelling skills. The following year, I worked with one student who had severe learning disabilities. I helped him to organize and write out his homework assignments, making sure that he understood each assignment.
As an adult, I have been involved with my church's Children's Ministry for more than 30 years, and have also been trained as a Court Appointed Special Advocate, volunteering in the 7th Judicial District of Iowa. As a CASA, I serve as an extra set of eyes and ears to the Juvenile Courts who are responsible to keep children safe, who are at risk of neglect and abuse. This requires me to work with DHS and various agencies and services within the community to provide stability and family reunification efforts when necessary. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taken American History at CCC and have had a class on women in Am. History. I really enjoyed both classes that I took.
I have attended pentecostal churches for most of my life. I am very familiar with bible stories that are taught to children in Sunday School by attending such classes as well as teaching classes for 20 years with 4's, 5's and Kindergarten students.
I believe that the best way to teach people about God and faith is by studying specific subjects through biblical search, and by reading various books and articles by christian authors who may or may not be professionals in the subject that they write about. When a person has surrounded themselves with other believers they learn from each other as they face daily challenges, through encouragement, sharing scriptures that have brought peace or insight to their situation. Some of my favorite authors are James Dobson, Joyce Myers, Ken Lane, Robert Schuller, and Dave Ramsey.
