I am Tony. I am a recent Ph.D. graduate from the University of Iowa in biomedical engineering and I received my bachelor's in physics and chemistry. I am Tony. I am a recent Ph.D. graduate from the University of Iowa in biomedical engineering and I received my bachelor's in physics and chemistry. I enjoy getting to help students learn concepts so that they can apply them to their work. I have found that students oftentimes do not realize how much they already know and all they need is someone to walk through problems and aid them in thinking through how they apply that knowledge to solving a problem. I try to help students understand the basic concepts and then walk step by step through problems to solidify the concepts. My favorite thing to see is a student have a light bulb moment where they now understand a concept that they did not when they came to me.
My overall method with students is to first review what they have been taught as I find the more students hear concepts explained, the more they will remember long-term. I also generally have students explain the concept back to me as being able to teach it to me reinforces learning. Then I like to go through examples of applying the concept and changing the example so that students do not memorize how to solve one problem but rather are better able to apply the concept to a variety of problems. I understand that students are at different places in the learning process, so I am flexible with giving specific attention to helping them where they are at and adapting my teaching style to fit what they need.
I tutored students for 2 years during my time as an undergraduate in College Algebra, Mathematics for Elementary Education, and Calculus. This tutoring was mainly one on one, but I also tutored groups of 2-6 students as well. Additionally, I was a teaching assistant for calculus, mathematical methods, and numerical methods each for a semester. I understand that math can be challenging and intimidating. I had trouble with mathematics until high school where I had a great teacher who helped me understand algebra and I enjoy helping students who have a hard time with math.
I received my bachelor's degree in chemistry and was a teaching assistant for Analytical Chemistry for a semester in college. I have a number of years of experience informally tutoring my classmates in general chemistry and beyond. Chemistry can be a lot of fun and I like to help students see where chemistry can be applied.
One unusual talent I have is playing the clarinet. My primary experience is with the B-flat and A clarinets, although I have also played bass and E-flat clarinets as well. I was on a music scholarship in college and performed in both band and orchestra during my 4 years. I have had a variety of instructors who have taught me so I have seen a variety of teaching styles which can make learning the instrument easier and more enjoyable.
My goal is to help students learn so if you have specific needs or questions on subject material that the student needs help with, please ask because I want to make sure that I am the right fit for the student. Feel free to contact me to schedule a lesson.
Tony explained the concepts to my son really well and the next day, he even sent us a PDF of the review of what was discussed during the lesson. I’d highly recommend Tony to anyone who’s looking for a very dedicated tutor especially in the subject of math.Quan, 3 lessons with Tony
