Hello! My name is Christina. For nearly 10 years I've worked on staff at Kirkwood Community College’s Tutoring Services Department. There, I both tutored students in English Composition and Spanish, and I mentored and trained other tutors. I have a CRLA Level 1 Tutor Certification along with an Associate of Arts degree. During my experience, I've tutored college students who have a wide range of disabilities, learning, physical, and mental/emotional. It’s taught me the every student has a strength. It's my passion to help students, especially those who don't fit the average learning mold, to find those strengths.
Every student is unique with a unique learning style and unique challenges. When I first meet with students, I like to spend the first session getting to know them. I’ll ask them what struggles they’re having, explore what resources or materials they are using, and try to identify their strengths. It’s important to me to first understand where a student is having trouble before I help them try to move forward.
Once I have an understanding of their learning style, my tutoring approach aims to monopolize on their strengths. I teach them to identify how to learn best from the materials they have. I will also supplement materials and exercises from my own collection. I can fill a range of roles depending on the student’s needs, including teaching material, giving supplement instruction, leading practice exercises, hosting conversation practice, proofreading compositions, and coaching in study skills. As a tutor, it's my passion not just to help students learn material but also to help students to become learners.
My favorite subject to tutor in is language! I've taken all the Spanish classes my college had available: Elementary Spanish through Advanced Independent Studies. Through these, I’ve gained an intermediate fluency in Spanish. I also received tutoring myself from native speakers. (So I know what it's like to be in the student's seat!) I'm also very passionate about the English language. I love writing and all aspects of grammar, usage and composition. As such, I've had a lot of experience at Kirkwood Community College, not only tutoring English speakers in learning Spanish, but I've also worked with English Language Acquisition students from a variety of different countries such as Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America.
There are few things more satisfying to me than helping a student, not just to succeed in their coursework, but also to become stronger learner by the end of the day. If you’re interested in working together with me, please don’t hesitate to get in touch! I respond to messages within 24 hours during business days.
