About Linda

I have been teaching elementary students for 15 years. I have a B.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Northern Iowa and an M.Ed. in Reading from the University of North Texas. My teaching experiences have included classroom, Title 1, and Special Education positions with K-6 grade students and my tutoring experiences have included contract and center jobs with elementary, middle, and high school students. I involve students in the learning process by providing hands-on activities and involving them in active participation during a lesson. Teaching Reading to students has included phonics, phonemic awareness, vocabulary, comprehension and fluency strategies and using the balanced literacy approach to incorporate Reading and Writing. Teaching sounds, letters, word recognition, and sentences builds skills. In teaching Math, I incorporate skills, story problems, and manipulatives. Students gain understanding through explanations and hands-on participation. I like to motivate students and see them become excited and develop a love of learning. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am an elementary teacher and I have taught students for 12 years in classroom, Title 1, and special education classes. I have a B.A. degree in Elementary Education and I am certified in Elementary Education in Texas, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

I have taught students of many diversities, interests, levels, and abilities. I have enjoyed getting to know students and providing them lessons to meet individual learning needs. I am familiar with learning guidelines for each grade level and have helped students be successful in meeting grade level goals. I have worked extensively with students in Reading, Writing, and Math by assessing students with running records, sight word lists, phonemic awareness inventories, and basic math tests and by providing lessons to include a student's areas of interest in addition to learning goals. I use explanation, demonstration, and questioning and the student uses hands-on activities as part of lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I have taught elementary and middle school students with very little or no English. I have enjoyed getting to know many students and helping them to communicate with English. My first teaching experience was in Pharr, Texas-- about 3 miles from the border of Mexico. I taught elementary and middle school students Reading and used many pictures and hands-on activities in my lessons. In recent years, I have taught elementary ESL students in DISD and Plano. I have also tutored individual students that are new to America and know very little English or no English. I have used pictures, sight words, phonemic awareness drills and word lists, and much participation and student involvement. I would love to work with ESL students by teaching them the basics of English and to help them learn sounds, writing, and reading in English.

Phonics

I have a B.A. in Elementary and a M.Ed. in Reading. My coursework included identifying and comparing sounds, putting sounds together, and blending sounds into words. I have taught individual students, small groups, and whole classes. I have taught letters and sounds to PK, K, and 1st graders and have incorporated phonics and phonemic awareness into lessons for students in PK-5 grades. I worked at Shelton as a tutor and an auditory instructor. In this experience, students would repeat the sound, and determine same or different sounds after I gave them a word or words. In teaching phonics, I have used auditory tapes, videos and CDs. I have also had students match letter to sounds that they hear. I like to involve the students in activities and monitor them as they progress in learning sounds and combining sounds into words.
