Hello, my name is Trisha. I am currently the Elementary & Middle School Virtual teacher at Expo Alternative Learning School. I've been at Expo for 3 years now and many more to come! I work with students K-8th virtually on all subjects. I enjoy working with students very much. I graduated from UNI in 2008 and am still getting my feet wet, so to speak, with just starting to teach virtually. This is my 3 year working with the Plato program, but I have taught in a variety of classrooms and have tried many different styles of teaching. I have only been the Virtual teacher for a few months. I believe the hands-on approach works best with students at the middle level. I have tutored my cousin and a few other students. I also coach at volleyball at Hoover and softball at West in Waterloo. I also work at the A to Z Daycare in the summer. I live in Waterloo with my husband and stepdaughter and pets. I enjoy the outdoors and sports and cooking and gardening! We enjoy camping and being with family and friends!

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have a coaching certificate from UNI. I took the basketball theory class because it is my favorite sport. I enjoy watching and playing it, therefore, I wanted to coach it. I have coached middle school girls basketball for two years and my 8th grade girls this year won the tournament. I have one year of coaching boys basketball. I intend to coach both girls and boys next year.
I am a firm believer in the fundamentals of a sport. Basketball is almost 80% mental and 20% physical. They say perfect practice makes perfect and I totally agree. If you put in the time and energy, you will get better! I also believe that a positive attitude can make or break an athlete. If you come to a practice with a positive attitude and the motivation to better yourself, every practice will matter and get you that much closer to your goal! :)
I have no previous cooking credentials other than I spend a lot of time in my own kitchen. I have worked in restaurants and pick up ideas and tips to better my own recipes. I am currently in the process of putting together a family cookbook with recipes from all the family members that are the favorites. I enjoy cooking and am very good at it.
I learned from my parents as well as my grandparents. I was raised on the meat and potato meals, so that is what I do well. I also love to bake. I may use recipes once, then I tweak them to my liking and go from there.
I am a licensed teacher for K-6th from UNI. I thoroughly enjoy teaching each subject and am knowledgeable in each subject. There is a curriculum that teachers follow for each subject. I currently teach 5th grade math and science so the curriculum is fresh in my mind every day.
I think that using manipulatives and experiments keeps the student involved and interested in learning. So I try to incorporate those into the curriculum in their learning.
