About Andrew

I have had roughly ten years of experience working with students and encouraging their academic success. I studied economics, history, and social studies secondary education at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, graduating in 2004. I have a teacher's license from the State of Indiana, though have never taught much in a public school setting as I soon found it more rewarding to work with students individually or in much smaller groups than a classroom of thirty. I worked for various Sylvan Learning Centers as a Director of Education where I worked with parents and students to create long-term goals for the students' learning while also working on more immediate academic concerns. I have worked with students as young as three years old all the way up to a grandfather who upon being laid off from his factory job of nearly forty years was convinced by his children and grandchildren that he should learn to read. Most recently, I have worked at a school for middle/high school aged students with complex learning disabilities. In that setting, I wasn't so much a teacher as a life skills mentor, but found it very rewarding. I have also worked with a handful of individual college-aged students in a variety of subjects. I primarily work with students on mathematics or math intensive subjects such as chemistry or physics, but have also worked with students across a variety of other subjects: criminal justice, English/grammar/reading/writing, history, psychology, economics, government, and standardized test prep (ACT/SAT, ASVAB, PRAXIS). My personal philosophy is that I call my students “students” and not “children” or really any other words, and that is because I see those that I work with as pupils, people that study a subject and also themselves. I believe that aside from a personal relationship with God, two things can make a person better: hard work, and a good education. Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Social Studies

I have had approximately 80 college credit hours worth of Social Studies classes. I am also licensed, albeit expired, to teach Social Studies (broadly) as well as US History, World Civilization, and Economics in the State of Indiana.
