About Michelle

For the past two years I've been an instructor at ISU and teach ENGL 150, ENGL 250 (introductory composition classes) and assist with ENGL 207 (creative writing). In May I will graduate with a MFA in Creative Writing.

While in Ames, I have assisted 2 PhD candidates at Walden with writing/editing their dissertations for Psychology, have tutored a PhD candidate in Biology in writing, and have worked with two ESL students.

I have 4 years of college tutoring experience, working as a biology tutor at Beloit College and was a Biostatistics TA as a freshman. Additionally, I spent the last summer teaching intermediate and advanced English to two children (9 and 11) in Istanbul, Turkey. I have also volunteered teaching reading skills to first and second graders at an elementary school in Beloit, WI.

I graduated summa cum laude, with departmental honors in both Environmental Biology and Creative Writing, so I am well equipped to teach both biology and English. I am particularly adept at ecology, environmental sciences, remediation/restoration, biostatistics, genetics, essay writing, creative writing and literature. During college I won several awards including, being the top freshman in environmental science, the top sophomore/junior in marine biology and the senior who was the outstanding biology scholar. I have lived and studied in the Galapagos islands and have done research with the Galapagos National Park about sea lion populations and behavior.

I recently took the GRE and scored a perfect score on the writing section (6.0) and in the 93rd percentile on the verbal.

In high school, I graduated with a 4.6 GPA from Claremont High School. I scored a 5 on the Biology, Environmental Science and US History AP tests and a 4 on the English Composition and US Government tests.

I have taken 2 years of college level Spanish and lived in Ecuador with a Spanish speaking host family for 5 months, so am capable of tutoring introductory Spanish.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Biology

I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Environmental Biology with departmental honors. My specific areas of expertise are: Ecology, Environmental Science, Restoration, Remediation and Genetics.

Biostatistics

In college I took BIO 248: Biometrics, a class about Biostatistics and experimental design. I got an A in this class and later became a TA and college tutor. In terms in Biostatistics I know basic statistics (standard deviation, mean, confidence limits, etc.) as well as ANOVAs, regressions, correlations, chi-square tests, tests of independence as well as nonparametric alternatives to these tests. I do not know how to use SAS as I was taught how to analyze data using JMP, the software used by professional, publishing biologists.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have previously tutored children in K-6th grade. I was a reading and math tutor to a second grader, I have taught English to children between the ages of 9 and 11, and I was a volunteer for a reading program for first graders. I have a BS in biology and English so am well equipped to tutor elementary level math, science and humanities.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Bachelors in English and worked for a summer in Istanbul, Turkey teaching English as a second language. My strength is in teaching conversational English.

Genetics

In college I took an upper level class on Genetics where I learned basic mendelian genetics (dominant, recessive traits, codominance, epistasis, etc.) and quantitative genetics (heritability, correlated traits, inbreeding coefficients, Hardy-Weinburg equilibrium, etc.).

Sewing

I have worked for 4 years in a costume shop in Beloit, WI. I was a supervisor my last year where I managed 4-10 people and assisted them with sewing skills. We costumed 4 shows a year, so I have made both modern and period pieces. I have experience on sewing machines, sergers and with hand sewing.

Writing

I have a Bachelors in Creative Writing and got a perfect score on the GRE Writing Section.
