About Preston

I began tutoring when I was in high school. I would help my family and friends in courses like math, English, and science. As a tutor, I would make sure that they would understand the material so that they would succeed in their class. Consequently, when I entered college, I decided to become a tutor because I love to help people and was good at assisting them. I love tutoring my students because I can slowly see progress in them. He or she may struggle at first because the material is new or difficult. But eventually, he or she is able to whip through their homework or is not struggling as much.

I am a undergraduate student trying to get a dual major in both biochemistry and English and minor in Woman Studies. With both of these majors, I am qualified to tutor subjects in STEM because I volunteered at a research lab at our university that looks at complimentary alternative medicine (CAM) for Type II Diabetes treatment during my free time and worked in a waste-water lab during the summer. I like research because it allow students to apply material from lecture into real life applications. As for English, I have taken many classes focused around rhetoric and composition and know my way around writing a well composed essay along with the mechanics of English.

Even though I am a student at the university level, I am studying new material every semester. Learning new material helps me to refresh my brain so that I do not forgot older information that I learned in high school or even from elementary school. As a tutor, I try to go over the material in a way that is engaging so that it does not bore the student and allows them to recollect it during a test or quiz. Also, I will slow down or re-explain the information if the student is having a hard time understanding the concepts. Consequently, I may not have a professional degree yet, but I am determined, patient, and knowledgeable in the fields that I teach.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I use math every day in my field of study and research so that I can compute data results. Also, I have taken Calculus and understand how to approach algebra in different methods to help students understand the same problem or concepts. Consequently, I can help students understand how to work through problems, so they feel more confident in algebra.

Biology

I feel that I am qualified to tutor people in these subjects because I received excellent grades in both introductory and advanced courses of Biology at the college level. I can help students understand concepts within Biology since understanding this subject is important for my field of study.

English

I feel that I am qualified as an English tutor because that is part of my dual major. I have taken several classes in writing technique, literature, and study of English language, so I understand how to write better or comprehend different types of written work.
