About Nancy

As a writer and teacher I'm proficient in all aspects of language arts, from English to literature, reading to writing as well as vocabulary, spelling and grammar.

This also means I'm comfortable tutoring in reading and English for the ACT and SAT.

My BA in History from the University of Western Ontario (London, Ontario, Canada) and MA in Political Science from The University of Hawaii at Manoa ensures that I'm skilled in both history and politics.

I've been teaching for twelve years in Hawaii from elementary to college level.

I consider myself a lifelong learner so my goal is to instill a love of learning in my students as well. In fact, nothing pleases me more than when the "light" goes on in a student's eyes. I believe in a dynamic approach where the student is actively engaged rather than learning via worksheets and memorizations. I also work to provide the big picture, especially in subjects like history and politics. An understanding of context is sure to make a lesson more memorable.

I try to be flexible with time so I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy but I do offer makeup classes.

I look forward to being a part of your student's learning experience.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

As a published writer I am comfortable with all aspects of the language arts, including English at the high school and college level.

ACT Reading

As was previously noted, my experience as a writer makes me especially proficient for ACT Reading and other subjects in language arts.

American History

One of the core subjects in both my bachelor's and master's degree was American History.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've been an elementary (K-5) school teacher for ten years. Most of my experience has been in a traditional classroom but I've also taught environmental education in an outdoor setting.

English

I am proficient in all aspects of teaching English, from vocabulary and grammar to composition.

European History

While my History BA included a broad range of topics, European History was a focal point including a course specifically targeting WWI and WW2.

Government & Politics

I earned my master's degree in political science.

Grammar

My work as a proofreader/copy editor required a firm grounding in grammar.

Literature

I've needed to have a firm grounding in literature to become a successful writer.

Phonics

Phonics is an integral part of the elementary curriculum and since I have more than ten years working with grades K-2 I am more than proficient teaching it.

Proofreading

I was employed as a proofreader/copy editor for three local papers in Colorado.

Reading

I've always been a voracious reader, something that stood me in good stead when I pursued my bachelor's and master's degrees.

SAT Reading

Reading for the SAT requires a discerning eye. My education as well as experience as a writer means I read for comprehension and can teach that as well.

SAT Writing

It's pretty obvious that I have a firm grounding in writing since I am a published writer.

Social Studies

My undergraduate degree is in history and I have taught Social Studies at the elementary level for ten years.

Spelling

I've always been a good speller and my work as a writer and copy editor has honed that skill.

Study Skills

Part of my job as a teaching assistant at the University of Hawaii at Manoa required meeting with students at least one a week, and sometimes more, to prepare them for exams. This meant helping them focus without getting bogged down in too much information.

Vocabulary

I am more than proficient in vocabulary since I work with words all the time as a writer.

World History

I've taken a number of relevant courses both during my bachelor's as well as master's degree.

Writing

I am a writer so would suggest I have a firm grounding in all aspects of writing.
