About Brittany

As a first generation college student, I was well aware of the difficulties of keeping up with peers in the classroom. However, through hard work and determination I was able to graduate with an impressive GPA and a new perspective. Since, I have felt a strong desire to help other students of all ages be prepared for the expectations they will encounter in professional academic settings. Addressing educational concerns early on can significantly influence a student's performance in the long run.

I have served as a tutor since high school, where I helped seniors struggling to pass their math required for graduation. In college, I worked with several students with Asperger's adjust to college life and learn practical and invaluable study skills. A family friend asked me to tutor his nephew, who was a sophomore in high school with the reading and math skills of an elementary student. While preparing for the SAT/ACT and honing in on basic grammar and writing skills, the student was able to raise his test score by 300-400 points in various categories.

As a social work major, we focused on empowering clients to make life changes in order to better their lives. The same applies to tutoring. Students deserve to be given the confidence to excel academically, which will inevitably produce well-informed citizens in our communities. By taking whatever amount of time is necessary to instill tenacity and courage in a student, tutors can aid students in succeeding.

Math was one of my favorite subjects, and still is! I have worked with many students in Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, and Geometry.

English and grammar are also my strong areas. I served as a writing tutor and have written 2 undergrad theses as well as working as a columnist for my hometown's newspaper for 2 years.

Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to helping you or your child succeed.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

I served as an Algebra 2 and 3 tutor at a high school. I am very competent in tutoring math and returning to basic material if needed to conquer the new lessons.

English

I have experience tutoring English for college preparation, ACT/SAT, and college success. I have also worked as a columnist for a well-read newspaper.

Prealgebra

I have tutored many students in pre-algebra, Algebra 1, 2, and 3 as well as geometry.

Sociology

I received by BA in Sociology with concentrations in Social Work and Family Counseling. I have studied classical sociological theory such as Marx, DuBois, Weber and Durkheim as well as more modern theorists such as Gottman, Yancey, and Ritzer. Finally, I have written two theses incorporating sociological theory entitled "PTSD and the Military: Exploring the Stigma" and "Mourning White Privilege: Implications for Minority Populations."
