As a first generation college student, I was well aware of the difficulties of keeping up with peers in the classroom. However, through hard work and determination I was able to graduate with an impressive GPA and a new perspective. Since, I have felt a strong desire to help other students of all ages be prepared for the expectations they will encounter in professional academic settings. Addressing educational concerns early on can significantly influence a student's performance in the long run.
I have served as a tutor since high school, where I helped seniors struggling to pass their math required for graduation. In college, I worked with several students with Asperger's adjust to college life and learn practical and invaluable study skills. A family friend asked me to tutor his nephew, who was a sophomore in high school with the reading and math skills of an elementary student. Math was one of my favorite subjects, and still is! I have worked with many students in Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and 2, and Geometry.
English and grammar are also my strong areas. I served as a writing tutor and have written 2 undergrad theses as well as working as a columnist for my hometown's newspaper for 2 years.
Feel free to contact me with any questions you may have. I look forward to helping you or your child succeed. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I received by BA in Sociology with concentrations in Social Work and Family Counseling. I have studied classical sociological theory such as Marx, DuBois, Weber and Durkheim as well as more modern theorists such as Gottman, Yancey, and Ritzer. Finally, I have written two theses incorporating sociological theory entitled "PTSD and the Military: Exploring the Stigma" and "Mourning White Privilege: Implications for Minority Populations."
