About John

I have a passion for imparting the knowledge of music and giving instruction on how to effectively and successfully apply that knowledge. I have more than 21 years of teaching experience for piano and music theory. I also teach improvisation and contemporary composing, giving extensive training in the areas of chord building, methods to create interesting, cool chord progressions, chord substitution, arranging and rearranging music. I teach the following playing styles for piano as well as synthesizer: classical, pop, contemporary, rock, funk, gospel, country and jazz elements. I am also a keyboard recording artist with 15 CD's currently released. I have released 19 pieces of sheet music and a music theory book entitled, "Chord Progression Ideas for the Contemporary Pianist."

I am encouraging, focused, positive, interesting, fun and genuinely enthusiastic about what I teach. Most importantly, I love working with people and understand the importance and essential application of patience, kindness and encouragement during my teaching sessions. I believe these essential elements help the student to comfortably progress without stress.

I also enjoy working with students who need tutoring for English, grammar, writing and Microsoft Word.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have an excellent command of the English language. I also excel in using correct grammar, sentence structure and punctuation.

I feel well qualified to help those who are preparing for an ACT English Test.

Bible Studies

I have been reading and studying the Bible for close to 42 years and have been attending Christian churches during this time that have taught many, many subjects from the Bible.

I have taught a number of subjects from the Bible, having spoken in several churches in Hawaii, the Philippines and New Jersey.

I love Bible studies and have a passion for the Bible and its teachings.

Composition (Music)

I studied music theory, harmony, counterpoint, choral arranging and orchestration from a professional composer and arranger who also taught 5 instruments. I have released 19 pieces of sheet music and a book entitled, "Chord Progression Ideas for the Contemporary Pianist." I have released 13 keyboard CD's since 1996. Most of the music on these is original.

Ear Training

I have taken ear-training instruction and have incorporated ear-training into my private music lessons over the last 10 years. The Piano Adventures instruction series that I use includes ear-training and I have given additional ear-training apart from that as needed.

English

Throughout my life, I have endeavored to be one who communicates with excellence, using proper English and grammar. As a private music instructor, this is very basic and extremely important. After high school, I took a semester of study for Electronics Instrumentation. An English 101 course was included in this semester. During the three semesters of Music Business at Honolulu Community College, a demand was placed upon my ability to not only communicate with, but also write with a level of English and grammar that was fitting for college.

General Computer

Some years ago, I took several computer courses that enabled me to receive four certifications. I received an A+ certification from CompTIA and was also MOUS (Microsoft Office User Specialist) certified for MS Word, MS Excel and MS Access. During that time I also took the first course toward an MCSE. With 19 years of teaching experience and many years of working on both PC's and MAC computers as well as using numerous computer applications, E-mail and several Internet browsers, I feel confident and highly qualified to teach General Computer.

General Music

I have given private piano and theory instruction for more than 21 years. I also teach improvisation and composition. My background includes training for piano, theory, harmony, advanced harmony, counterpoint, music history, choral arranging, orchestration, rhythm pattern studies, improvisation, composition and lyric writing.

Grammar

Using proper grammar has always been extremely important in my life, from the early days of grammar school, through high school, into college and then into the business world. I have made it a point to excel in grammar, which I believe is a part of the basic foundation for success in every field of employment.

I have taken an English 101 course as well as several other college courses that demanded the proper use of grammar.

I have also written and self-published a music theory book which required perfect grammar.
