About Antoinette

As a child I always loved reading books. As I got older, I also grew to love writing. Teaching reading and writing is my passion; one I have followed for many years, working with elementary, middle, and high school students. Today our world requires collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. Reading and writing well builds skills necessary for the 21st century.
I have a masters in English and also one in ESL. My teaching has always focused on engaging students as they grow to love reading and writing. No one can or will read or write well if he or she feels little or no connection to developing the necessary skills. It is essential to meet students where they are. If students feel a connection to a book or they are asked to write on a topic that is relevant to them, engagement and skill building will follow. My hope is to have each and every one of my students experience the magic as well as the power of reading and writing well. So far, I have have been quite successful.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Aspergers

I have worked with children with special needs for many years. Specifically, as a Humanities teacher I have worked with and taught adolescents with Aspergers Syndrome. Being the Learning Support Coordinator for the last four years at the private high school where I am employed, I have not only taught adolescents with Aspergers, but also have worked closely with educational psychologists in considering the academic, social, and emotional needs of these students. In consultation with the psychologist I then develop and help to implement a Successful Learning Plan for the student.

English

I have a masters in English and one in ESL. I have also completed six courses towards a masters in Literacy. I have taught Humanities for 15 years. Teaching reading and writing are my passions. I tutored undergraduate and graduate students at my university's writing center. I also taught a masters course to middle school teachers on Literacy. I can and do constantly uncover ways to engage my students, helping them to enjoy close reading and create clear, focused stories, reading reflections, essays and research papers.

Reading

I have taught elementary, middle school, and high school reading and writing for many years. Many children and adolescents find reading very challenging. Often it is simply because they have not found their own entry into the joys of reading. It becomes more about hard work and not how pleasurable it can be. Developing the skill of reading does take time and practice, but the learning process can be enjoyable. Often that makes all the difference between being a reluctant reader and a life long reader.
I work on creating a relationship between the student and the text. If a story meets a student, the student will always become invested in working on improving the necessary skills.

Social Studies

Social Studies is a subject I have taught for many years in my role as a Humanities teacher. I have taught elementary children as well as high school students. Specifically, I have taught American History, government and civics. Often as an English teacher I connect the text we are reading with a specific event or focus in our history. It is important that my students can make connections with our historical past and our future as a nation.

Special Needs

Working with children as well as adolescents who have special needs has always been a very fulfilling aspect of my teaching experience. I have worked in early intervention programs, with children who had severe developmental disabilities, and also, as an English teacher in regular classroom settings, with children and adolescents who have learning challenges.

I have written many IEPs. I always work closely with a formulated IEP making sure my students are receiving all their accommodations and attaining their benchmarks and objectives.

I have worked for twenty years with children with special needs.Though, I do not have certification in special education, I have taken many master level special education courses, particularly ones focused on Literacy.
If necessary, I can share recommendations from principals and colleagues about my special needs teaching qualifications.

Accommodating my students' needs is an essential focus in my lesson planning.Today many students have diverse learning styles, needs, and challenges. It is important to me, as a teacher, to help every one of my students to experience success, joy, and confidence.
