In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have extensive experience assisting both adolescent and adult students in improving their understanding and appreciation of algebra 1 concepts. As a poet and author, I especially enjoy helping students relate algebraic concepts to their own life experiences whenever possible, to underscore the value of developing their facility with number manipulation in general. Whether in providing general homework help or strategizing for a standardized exam such as the SAT or ASVAB, I view each algebra-based learning session as an opportunity to discover something new and interesting about the inner workings of mathematical relationships.
I regularly assist K-12 students and adult learners with homework and standardized test preparation related to all math levels up through Algebra 2. As a poet, writer and student of creative thinking, I also enjoy helping students perceive the connections between math and other areas of life, whether academic, artistic/philosophical, or interpersonal. In developing students' understanding and appreciation of mathematical concepts such as those used in Algebra 2, I consistently work to adapt my teaching methods to the learning needs of each individual student.
Having completed Chinese studies both at the university level and in an immersion environment (in Beijing, China), I am able to assist students in grasping the fundamental structures of spoken Mandarin, including correct pronunciation of tonal components. My focus is on conversational (as opposed to written) proficiency as I introduce various aspects of the language and culture to students in a fun and easily understandable way.
As a developmental editor, self-published author and proficient speaker of six languages, I have a well-developed understanding of general language structure and enjoy assisting students in exploring and appreciating the nuances of spoken and written English. Since my graduation from Stanford University in 2000, I have served intermittently as an English tutor and ESL instructor for children and adults in both private and institutional settings in Japan, Brazil, California and Hawaii. By assessing each individual learner's proficiency and helping each to capitalize on previously mastered language structures, I aim to enhance my students' fluency and confidence in all areas of written and spoken English, including grammar & syntax, vocabulary, wood roots & origins, accurate pronunciation, speech rhythms, reading comprehension, and writing ability.
I am an honors graduate of Stanford University with extensive tutoring experience in Geometry, Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1, and can readily assist students of any age in improving their understanding and performance in these areas. I particularly enjoy exploring and relating geometrical concepts in terms of various other disciplines (including Science, Music and Writing), in order to capitalize on each student's academic interests and aptitudes. I have successfully assisted multiple ASVAB applicants here on Maui in preparing for the Geometry section of their Armed Services entrance exam. In the meantime, I continue to provide both remedial and regular one-on-one Geometry tutoring for local junior high and high school students.
15+ years of linguistic and literary study, teaching and developmental editing have served to significantly enrich my own understanding and appreciation of English grammar. By adjusting my teaching methods and content according to their individual needs, I aim to capitalize on students' present understanding of language structures in order to offer them a clear, detailed and engaging approach to all aspects of verbal and written English communication. My proficiency in multiple languages further enables me to provide useful and varied conceptual references by which to convey the subtleties of English-specific grammar points.
Aloha - I am a former Coordinator for International Relations (CIR) on the internationally recognized Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) program and greatly enjoy assisting both beginner- and intermediate-level students in their journey to master the elements of spoken Japanese. As a lifelong student of multiple languages and a recipient of Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) certification, I aim to convey both the linguistic and cultural nuances of spoken Japanese in simple and creative ways, according to each individual student's interests and learning style. Mahalo for your consideration, and I look forward to working with you!
I am able to assist students in mastering all aspects of the Portuguese language as it is spoken in Brazil, based on several years spent living and traveling in the country as well as intensive at-home study.
As a former home school educational program manager and devoted math tutor, I have continued to refine my ability to navigate the mental terrain of prealgebra in ways that students of all ages and learning styles can relate to (and hopefully appreciate!). I also recognize that prealgebra represents a critical transition in students' mathematical understanding. As such, I consistently aim to help students perceive new dimensions of relevance between the mathematical world and that of everyday experience. In adapting my lesson content and teaching methods to suit the learning needs of each student, my goal wherever possible is to create a positive learning experience that enhances academic understanding, interdisciplinary awareness, and self-esteem all at once.
I enjoy assisting students in deepening their understanding and improving their performance on all subjects covered in the SAT Math section, including Geometry, Algebra, Logic and Reasoning Ability. Please feel free to contact me for all your SAT Math tutoring needs - mahalo!
