Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

Qualifications:
I have been a certified special education teacher for the last 12 years in Hawaii. During this time, I worked with many students who were diagnosed with both ADD and ADHD. I also am writing my dissertation at this time for my Ph.D. in Special Education. At the current time, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher and continue to observe students and adults with ADD/ADHD.

A condition characterized by severe problems of inattention, hyperactivity, and/or impulsivity. Once a person with ADHD/ADD begins a task, it is difficult for them to mentally switch to a new activity. There is not a simple diagnostic test for ADHD/ADD, but there is strong evidence linking neurological abnormalities to ADHD.

ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. To be diagnosed with ADHD the child must have symptoms before they are 7. a few of the symptoms of ADHD are:
-fidgeting and squirming in their seats and the inability to stay in their seat.
-Feelings of restlessness and a need to be always on the go.
-Excessive talking and interrupting others.
-Blurting out the answers before being called on for their turn.

ADD- Attention Deficit Disorder without the hyperactivity. Symptoms of ADD include:
-Carelessness and mistakes on assignments.
-Failure to follow through on tasks.
-Poor organization skills.
-Easily distracted.
-Losing things
-Avoiding tasks that require a lot of mental effort.
-Poor organizational skills
-Forgetful

Algebra 1

Algebra I is the branch of mathematics concerning the study of the rules of operations and relations. It substitutes letters for numbers.

Aspergers

One of 5 autistic spectrum disorders; a milder form autism without significant impairments in language and cognition; characterized by primary problems in social interaction.
Aspergers syndrome is often thought of as "High Functioning Autism," because the person may not have speech or cognitive delays.
The cause of Aspergers Syndrome is virtually unknown, but one thing we do know is that it is genetic. Even though a person with Aspergers Syndrome may have difficulty socially, they may have above average intelligence.

Qualifications: I was a special education teacher in the state of Hawaii from February 2001 until June 2012. Currently, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher for the Central District of Oahu. Over the years, I taught many students who had Aspergers Syndrome.

Autism

Qualifications:
I have been a special education teacher in the state of Hawaii for 11 years and 9 months, working with children with autism. Currently, I am a District Autism Consultant Teacher for the Central District on Oahu. I am writing my dissertation for my Ph.D. in special education with an emphasis on autism.

Autism is a pervasive developmental disability characterized by extreme withdrawal, cognitive deficits, language disorders, self-stimulation, and onset before the age of 30 months.
People diagnosed with autism have difficulty in three different areas:
-Social interaction
-Behavior
-Communication
-----Social Interaction
---The person with autism may lack social skills. They may not respond when a person calls them by name. They lack empathy, and are unaware of others feelings. They have poor eye contact, and prefer to play alone.
-----Behavior
---This person had specific routines and rituals and if they are disturbed at any time, chaos ensues. They may perform repetitive movements, such as hand-flapping or spinning. Also, sensory reactors are magnified. They may extremely sensitive to light, noise, or touch, yet they are somewhat oblivious to pain.
-----Language
---The person with autism may have delayed speech or not speak at all. They may not look a person in the eye when they are talking to them. They can't start a conversation and keep it going. May use a different tone or rhythm when they speak. They may repeat words verbatim, but not understand what they mean. They sometimes do not seem to understand simple questions or directions.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am a certified teacher in the state of Hawaii and have international teaching experience. Elementary (k-6th) encompass subjects taught to students in the kindergarten - 6th grades. These subjects being: Language Arts and Reading, knowledge of literature and literary analysis, knowledge of the writing process and applications, Reading methods and assessment, knowledge of communication, knowledge of information and media literacy, History, geography, government and civics, music, visual arts, physical education, and health. Elementary Math

Elementary Mathematics is organized around numbers and arithmetic. The topics are covered roughly in the order they are developed in elementary school. These topics are addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, negative and real numbers, and the beginning of pre-Algebra.

I am proficient in English, having used it to obtain my B.A., 2 M.A.'s, and coursework toward my Ph.D. I also taught in public and private schools for the past 13 years, where I used my proficiency in English to teach my students the general rules of English and Grammar.

Government & Politics

Government and politics provide analytical perspective on government and politics in the United States. It involves both the study of general concepts used to interpret U.S. politics and the analysis of specific case studies. It also requires familiarity with the various institutions, groups, beliefs, and ideas that constitute U.S. political reality. This study encompasses the constitutional beginnings, American documents, American Federalism, political parties and voting behaviors, elections, the judiciary, and civil rights, to name a few.

Reading

Reading is not just about pronouncing the words read. It requires an understanding of what is read. As a teacher, I know that student must be taught strategies when they are learning to read. These strategies can be generalized, and used in all subjects. Strategies I uses, as a teacher and tutor, are: visualization, retell and summarize, connect the text to a student's prior knowledge & experiences, ask and answer questions about what is read, and the use of specific word-attack strategies.

Social Studies

I also received a Leadership grant from the DOE to work on my Ph.D. in Special Education and later teach at UH (2 years for every year of my 4-year grant). I am a certified and licensed Special Education Teacher, k-12 in the state of Hawaii.
