About Tim

Hi everyone, I'm Tim. I have both Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Economics, and a strong background in mathematics. Upon finishing my undergraduate studies, I spent five years as an Active Duty officer in the U.S. Army. More recently, I've spent several years conducting economic development research and analysis.

While formal tutoring is a new experience to me, I've informally tutored / instructed friends and associates on college-level economics and mathematics since the beginning of my undergraduate studies. As a student myself, I frequently helped peers complete their coursework for intro-level calculus, micro, and macroeconomics courses. While in the Army, I coached several of my soldiers as they worked towards college degrees. In preparation for the GRE, I participated in several informal "study sessions" where I was able to explain some of the more complex math problems relating to combinations and permutations. Finally, as a researcher, I helped numerous college-age interns develop a strong understanding of fundamental economic concepts.

In my experience, the best teachers were always those who provided an engaging, real-world context for academic concepts. For example, I still remember one instructor using the relationship between a car’s position, speed, and acceleration to introduce calculus, and another’s use of crashing oil prices during the Great Recession to illustrate supply and demand. This is the approach I’ve always tried to mimic in my own instruction of others. I feel that by bringing the material to life, it not only makes it more interesting for students, but also provides them with an intuitive foundation on which the understanding of more complex concepts can be built. I also like to walk through problems step-by-step with students to ensure they understand why they’re doing what they’re doing. I’ve found that this allows them to apply that understanding to a greater variety of problem types instead of just those that they have explicitly rehearsed.

Of course, not every student is the same, and not every student learns the same way. I therefore try to remain as flexible and adaptive as possible in both in my schedule and teaching style in order to ensure the needs of the needs of each individual student are met.

Above everything else, though, I believe teaching is about respect. I am excited by the possibility of helping others, and I promise to offer that respect at every step of the process. I will always offer quick responses and do my best to work your schedule. Please reach out at any time with any questions or to schedule a lesson.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
