About Allison

I am a certified special education teacher with an emphasis in deaf education and mild/moderate disabilities. I have taught in a variety of settings: family/homeschool groups, private church preschools, public schools, and a private high school. I have experience with infants/toddlers through high school students, but the bulk of my career has been teaching preschool and elementary school students.

I am trained in Phonics Plus and Orton-Gillingham methods.

When teaching deaf/hard of hearing students, I use the preferred communication method of the student (i.e. aural/oral, American Sign Language, total communication, etc.). I am also trained in auditory training.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have been teaching elementary school children in the special education setting since 1999. Most of my experience is with preschool and lower elementary, but I have taught upper elementary students as well. The core of my teaching has been in Math and Language Arts, but I have also taught science.

Hard Of Hearing

My second M.Ed. is in Deaf Education. I have been teaching Deaf/Hard of Hearing students in mainstream total communication schools (grades preschool - 6th grade) since 2000. Auditory training, modeling and imitation technique, and/or chaining can be emphasized while considering the child's primary mode of communication.

Sign Language

I have taken American Sign Language classes at Bellevue Community College and Kapiolani Community College. My second M.Ed. is in Deaf Education. I have been teaching Deaf/Hard of Hearing students since 2000 in a total communication setting.

Special Needs

My first M.Ed. is in Special Education Mild/Moderate Disabilities. I have experience teaching students (preschool to high school) with learning disabilities, ADD/ADHD, various medical conditions including deafness, speech/language disorders, and social/emotional/cognitive/developmental delays. I enjoy pinpointing the problem area and finding ways to make learning a success.

Allison is fantastic. — Allison has been great. My daughter has been very happy with her. In her words... "Allison is very helpful, smart, patient, kind, and calm. She is great at solving problems." I agree with my daughter and feel that Allison has gone above and beyond.
