I recently graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania with a BA in Biology and Political Science and an MA in Environmental Studies. I have previously worked as an ACT and SAT Subject test tutor at a college prep and tutoring center in San Diego, California called John Harvard Academy (JHA). I scored a 34 overall on my ACT with subscores of 35 in English, 35 in Math, 33 in Reading, and 32 in Science. On SAT Subject Tests, I scored 790 on Math Level II, 790 on Chemistry, and 790 on U.S. History. While at JHA, I helped several students increase their scores by 4+ points on the ACT. I enjoy tutoring for these tests because it helps me reexamine my own test prep methods for when I take graduate exams like the GMAT or LSAT.
In addition to standardized test prep, I have experience tutoring elementary to underclassmen college students in a variety of subjects due to my work at JHA. My expertise is pretty wide. In high school, I took 17 AP classes in a variety of subjects. I earned As in all my AP classes and scored a 4 or 5 on all the tests I took.
As a tutor, I evaluate why students are struggling. No two students are the same. Some students know the material very well but struggle to perform on the exams because they are too anxious. Therefore, I have used sessions to not only teach the material but also coach students on how to mitigate their test anxiety. Other students just need an extra push to study. They can learn material very well by themselves but procrastinate on test preparation. Once I recognize why my students are struggling, I try to show them their weaknesses. I then develop a study plan with them that they agree is feasible based on their current needs. As I work with my students, I update the study plan to reflect their changing needs.
