About Bonnie

My musical education started when I was five. My mother, a music teacher, taught me piano until tenth grade. I wasn't that excited about practicing as a kid, but I did and am still playing as an adult and truly enjoy it.

My first year in college was devoted to music with piano as my instrument.

For many years as a teen and adult I have played piano for church choirs. I played piano for the Glee Club Choir at my middle school for 3 years. Currently, I play for my own pleasure and would enjoy teaching again.

My vocal experience did not begin as early. I did sing in church and school choir during high school and university. However, my real vocal training began when I was an adult.
I've had ten years of voice lessons from two very professional teachers. I've performed (sung and danced) in several musicals with our local community theater. Presently I am singing as a member of the Windward Choral Society in Kailua. I performed at St. Andrews Cathedral in the Oahu Sacred Musical Festival the past two years. I will be teaching a class at the Joy of Music Youth Festival in Kailua in April.
I also teach a youth music class/Glee for the Kailua Recreation Dept.

Teaching ESL/ELL began when I was serving the the U.S. Peace Corps in Jamaica and I was asked to teach Jamaican adult literacy to adults who mostly spoke Patois. I taught this class for three years.

In Mexico I taught ESL for 5 months to students while I was learning Spanish.

In California, with Cultural Homestay Institute, for two summers I taught ESL to Japanese and Chinese high school students who came to study English for the summer.

In TAIWAN, I taught ESL at Feng Chia University in the English Language Department for one year.

This summer I taught ESL to students at University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Most recently, this October I completed the Oxford Seminars Certification Program for TESL/TESOL.

I am a certified, licensed school counselor K-12 in Hawaii, California and Mississippi therefore I have current background check and fingerprints with the Hawaii Dept. of Education. Counseling has been my occupation for 17 years. I now want to focus on what I truly love and enjoy and that is music and teaching English to people of other cultures.

Please consider me as your tutor. We will have an exciting, fun, learning experience.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
