I have always loved learning and that love doubled when I started teaching. I realize that in the process of teaching, you also learn. There is an exchange between teacher and student which is invaluable to both. In life, I've always thought the most effective way to teach was by example. The words you say don't matter unless your actions reinforce them. I also feel you can only be an effective teacher if you are willing to listen and learn from your students. Everyone's thought processes are different, and working with that variety is what makes teaching so exciting.
I have engaged in some form of teaching all my adult life. As a parent, I began coaching my children and tutoring in the classroom. I started my career as a substitute teacher for Hawaii's Department of Education and loved it so much I got my own students! I have worked with high school, college, & adult students by preparing them for CB, GED and SAT tests. I became certified in 2000 & have worked with at-risk students, as well as highly motivated students, both in public and private high schools. I have taught the four core subjects, with an emphasis on language arts, and I have also taught math at Kailua High School during their summer session. Now I spend my summers teaching a reading and study skills class at I'olani. I believe the breadth of my experience and my love of teaching are my best assets as a tutor and welcome the opportunity to use them to your advantage! My 6th grader is struggling with math. Translating word problems into equations has been very difficult and confusing for her. In their first lesson, Vicki showed great patience and was able to lead my daughter to recognize her own logic errors (thank you!).
My daughter, who has been so frustrated, said how quickly the lesson went and how good she feels about the material that was covered. My daughter shows confidence in math I haven't seen before. I am very grateful for Vicki's teaching skills and am scheduling more lessons.
Although my specialty is secondary education, I began my career as a substitute teacher. In that capacity, I worked with every grade level. I volunteered in elementary school while our sons were growing up - always in classrooms other than our children's. In addition, I coached youth soccer teams for elementary school level players. I have always enjoyed students of any age and have the patience and desire to work with all of them.
I have enjoyed making math user-friendly to elementary-aged students from individual tutoring to teaching pre-algebra to 35+ summer school students.
B.A., English, UCLA
Post Baccalaureate in Secondary Education, English, University of Phoenix
In addition to having my undergraduate and post graduate degrees in English, I have taught essay writing and grammar for the verbal section of the SAT as well as for the GED. As there are two main aspects of writing, form and content, I analyze which of the two seems to create the greatest roadblock for each student and focus on that first. If the ideas come easily, I encourage writing with no attention to form. Once the ideas are on the page, we organize and punctuate. If the reverse is true, we spend more time on brainstorming first. By simply breaking it down, I feel the student becomes more at ease with the process and less overwhelmed by each assignment.
