Texas State University (EDUCATION MATH)
I started my career as a tutor with a young boy while I was attending college, and was so successful that I majored in education in college, and became a middle school and high school math teacher.
I taught for six years in San Antonio, Texas, and was a high school varsity golf coach for two years, and then became a computer programmer for six years writing mainly in COBOL. But, there was a huge void in my life, since I was created to teach. Each of us has a gift, and mine is teaching. I joined Oracle Corporation in May of 1988, and have been teaching Oracle software classes for the past twenty-five years, have written two Oracle books, and have received several speaking awards at Oracle conferences. While an Oracle instructor at Oracle Corporation from 1988 - 1993, I was their number one instructor during the 1992-1993 year.
I have been to Hawaii fifteen times, and am in the process of moving from Dallas to Maui.
I am number 6 on an apartment wait list, and am estimating I will actually be living on Maui sometime in June of 2014.
I have loved Hawaii and its people since I was very young. My mother was a musician, and she played a lot of Hawaiian songs.
My dream, since first being on Maui back in 1983, has been to live on Maui, and give as much as I possibly can to the people of Hawaii. Wow, if you need a tutor I would highly recommend Pete! He was very patient in helping us learn and did not get upset when we asked a lot of questions. He is accessible by phone and scheduled an appointment with us within a day. He is intelligent, friendly, and a great communicator.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have been reading and studying the King James version of the bible since 1955, and read one chapter on most days. While in college, I took a course on the New Testament. I taught a men's Sunday School class in a large church for three years, and my students were ages 39 to 45.
While attending college, I wrote many FORTRAN programs. After graduating from college with a BS in Education, with math as my first teaching field, I taught the computer language of BASIC to James Madison High School students for two years.
After teaching middle school and high school math for six years at NEISD in San Antonio, Texas, I became a COBOL PROGRAMMER ANALYST with NCR of Atlanta, Georgia. I returned to Texas after one year, and continued programming using COBOL at several other companies. I programmed using COBOL for five years.
In 1988 I went to work for Oracle Corporation as an instructor. I have been teaching and coding the computer programming language of SQL since 1988, and PL/SQL since it was released in 1989.
Since 2007, I have been teaching the computer languages of SQL and PL/SQL at a college in Texas.
I have been playing golf since 1958, and attended high school in Daytona Beach, Florida. That is where I really learned how to play, and how to score. I played varsity golf all four years, and my lowest competitive round was a 73 - one over par. My lowest nine-hole score was a three-under-par 33 at the Daytona Beach Golf and Country Club when I was a junior.
I played very little golf in college, since I had to work to support myself, and had very little time for golf. However, I needed two elective courses to graduate during the summer of 1972, so I took a college golf class. I shot a six-under-par 66 (33-33) during the last week of the class.
After college, I taught middle school math for four years, and taught high school math for two years. During my two years teaching at James Madison HS, I was the varsity golf coach, and helped my golf team to greatly improve over a two year period. During this time, I played in many adult golf tournaments.
My lowest tournament score during this time was a three-under-par 69, and a two-under-par 70. I had also given several golf lessons to adults along the way.
During the summer of 1978, I qualified for the championship flight of the SAN ANTONIO MENS GOLF TOURNAMENT, and shot in the 70's al four rounds.
My last round in the 60's was back in 1980 when I shot a 67 at a golf course in Denton, Texas, where both of my daughters came out to watch.
I do NOT TEACH A GOLF SWING. Each of us has been created differently. Our swing speeds are all different. I take your swing and start there.
I helped an old friend out several years ago. He just could not break 80, no matter how hard he tried. I played 27 holes with him one day, and I told him to never use the words eagle, birdie, par, bogey, and double bogey. Instead, relate everything with respect to a 5. So, instead of saying he made a PAR 4, he would say, that is one under five. Once he understood he needed to be SIX UNDER FIVE'S on one nine, and FIVE UNDER FIVE'S on the back side, it was easy and took all of the stress out of scoring.
He shot a 74 or 75 on the last 18 holes. The first nine he learned a different way to approach scoring.
My success in college Speech classes inspired me to join Toast Masters as an adult. This gave me the confidence to start a career teaching Oracle, which I have enjoyed for 25 years. Many times during those years I was presented Public Speaking awards, and many times was told "Pete, you are the best speaker I have ever heard." I enjoy mentoring, tutoring and sharing what I have gleaned over the years, and have presented many "Teach the Teacher" sessions on making teaching sessions more captivating and enjoyable for students.
