Greetings Parents and Students,

My name is Claire. I am an experienced English/ELA, Humanities, ACT/SAT test prep, and general writing tutor available to work with students of all ages.

Born and raised in New York City, I now live on Oahu where I work as writer and tutor. I work with adults, high school and middle primarily tutoring writing, English, and the humanities. I graduated with honors from the University of Chicago, and received a master's in Writing from Bard MFA in 2014. For four years, I worked as a one-on-one private tutor in New York City with students grades 5 - 12, college level, and adult students.

**Out of concern for the health and safety of my students and their families (as well as my own) I am only offering remote tutoring services during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a few exceptions**

My approach:

Ideally, each new client relationship begins with a conversation. Especially where younger students are involved, I speak with parents and students (and occasionally teachers, if appropriate) to get baseline information about my potential client's academic context, their needs, struggles and goals.
My next step is to co-establish goals for the tutoring session or sessions, and create a customized study plan for that student.

My approach varies from client to client, but when it comes to developing critical thinking and writing abilities, I almost always emphasize active reading, and organization skills such as note-taking and outlining before we get to the actual writing of an assignment.

Every student learns a little differently; my goal is to find a solution that works for the individual. Drawing from a large toolbox of techniques and strategies derived from my experience teaching, working in different literary fields, and as a student of both creative and formal academic writing, I strive to help students close gaps in attention, comprehension, organization and writing, and ultimately, connect with the work they're doing.

I use techniques like brainstorming, targeted note-taking,
