Wayne State University, Detroit MI (English)
California State University Los Angeles, Los Angeles CA (Master's)
My educational background includes a B.A. and M.A. in English from Wayne State University and California State University, Los Angeles. English teaching experience includes twelve years at the junior and senior high level and six years teaching at the Community College of Denver, Remington and Westwood Colleges. Other level writing experiences were grant writing, business proposals and manuals, legislative policy and procedures, accreditation reports, community plans, and masters theses and doctoral dissertations. I hold California Lifetime teaching credentials grades 7-12 in English. Since 2000, I have owned and operated an educational service company that offers academic and career advisement and tutoring services for students and adults.
After 45 years in the field of education and business, I believe strongly that knowledge is power, and those who read well, speak well, and write well - will do well in this world. Writing will always be the most vital communication tool and will always be your voice to your teachers and colleagues. Over the years, I have developed efficient and effective methods, i.e. research ideas, evaluate findings, decide on subject matter, and then prepare an outline for all papers. My outcome is to have students writing all the time, rather than looking at a blank page making efficient use of their time. Students will see an immediate improvement in their writing skills and will build their confidence in future writing activities. More importantly, I bring a fresh look to tutoring this subject with humor and understanding.
I specialize in all writing activities for all subjects for students in grades 6-12, undergraduate and graduate students. My goal is to use concrete writing principles for all projects as only the content changes. Grammar, usage, and sentence structure are vital tools for writing well, and a well-organized paper presents ideas, facts, and opinions in a logical sequence. Homework assignments are meant to support necessary skill sets where needed and are also used to revise writing assignments. Feedback on student progress is given at the end of each tutoring session.
While I have a 24 hour cancellation policy, I use the opportunity to reschedule the appointment.
A proper learning environment is crucial to a successful tutoring experience. Arrangements will be made at the initial contact to meet at a suitable location.
I look forward to hearing from you and helping you succeed with your studies. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
