About Sydney

Hello everyone,

My name is Sydney, and I'm an undergraduate student at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Though relatively new to private tutoring (began in 2012), I have had several jobs in public tutoring and have discovered a love for working with students one-on-one. Professionally, I've worked at a learning center in Pearl City, HI, and spent nearly a year employed as a para-professional tutor at Wheeler Middle School.

A little bit about me academically--In 2012 I graduated from Mililani High School in Hawaii as a valedictorian with a 4.1 cumulative GPA. I won the Golden Scholars Outstanding Language Arts Student Award with first place, and have taken challenging courses (honors and AP) all through high school. I am currently working toward a degree in Linguistics, with a career interest in working as an interpreter for the EU in Brussels, and possibly teaching English abroad. I started out in a neuroscience major, so I've done a fair amount of study in neuroscience and related fields. I have experience in a wide variety of subjects, however, a few of my specialties are English/literature, writing, psychology, piano/music, and middle school math. Additionally, I would be happy to assist with anything related to linguistics and the Danish language, even though they are not available to list as a subject on this website.

I've always been a very curious soul and passionate about the pursuit of knowledge. Helping others succeed in their own endeavors is such a pleasure that it hardly even feels like a job! I fully believe in fostering a love of learning and catering to individual student needs; there's little more frustrating than having something explained to you repeatedly using the same blanket format. We'll work together to pinpoint exactly where the misunderstandings are, and find a way through it in a way that is memorable and makes sense to you.

If you're in the area and need assistance with anything I have to offer, feel free to contact me. I look forward to working with you!

*I'm newly certified in WyzAnt's online tutoring initiative and am currently offering online lessons for $25 an hour instead of my usual $40.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

General Music

I have been playing piano for 15 years. I have taken many lessons, including a year-long AP Music Theory course. I have also been teaching music and piano on my own for a couple of years.

Needlework

Though not technically the needlework most think of, I'm quite an avid knitter. I'm self-taught, and have been knitting for several years with great success. I've worked as a professional tutor in other areas, but I'd be happy to pass along my knitting skills to anyone who would like to learn this handy and rewarding craft.

Piano

Elementary and intermediate piano instruction, from basic theory and rhythm to actual performance and technique. I have been playing the piano since I was 4 . I have taken numerous lessons from many teachers and institutions. I have also taken and passed an AP Music theory course. In addition, I have been teaching piano and general music for a few years on my own.

Great tutor — Sydney really connected with my 14 year old daughter. This was the most engaged I have seen my daughter in a long time doing math. When she got done she said she enjoyed it and that she wanted to do it again. It was a like a light bulb went on in her brain which was great to see. Satisfied customer!! The things we enjoyed the most about Sydney were 1. Despite her young age she was able to comman ...
